Looking to get back into DBA after long long time away. Have copy of DBA 2.2 in loft, but no luck finding it so far :-) Have bought a bundle of figs off ebay, labelled as 'carthaginian army' unpainted, with view to using them to build two or more DBA armies. Not seen them in detail yet (on the way), but expected list is - Libyan spearmen x56
- Balearic slingers x32
- Numidian/moorish javelin x48
- Gallic javelin shield x16
- Spanish med cav spear shield x12
- Carthaginian Noble cav spear shield x8
- Carthaginian Officer cav x8
- Numidian light cav jav shield x24
- Carthaginian elephants x2
- Elephants with howdah x2
- Other elephants (unknown) x3
Thoughts on what competing armies I can build from these?

Are you planning on using this for 2.2 or 3.0? Either way at first glance it looks like you could build two Later Carthage armies out of it at least.

I’m running out of places to look for my old copy of 2.2 so will probably buy a copy of 3 and go with that..

Welcome back to DBA, Stevo. From that mix, you could easily build a II/40 Numidian army. It wouldn't have all the potential options for the DBA-3.0 list, but here's how it might look from your available figure-mix: - 1 x General (with Spanish bodyguard Cv, otherwise LH)
- 4 x horsemen (LH)
- 4 x javelinmen (Ps)
- 1 x archers of slingers (Ps) or elephants (El)
- 2 x javelinmen (Ps) or horsemen (LH) [The optional 2 x Roman-train regular javelinmen (4Ax) or imitation legionaries (4Bd) would figures you don't currently have.]
That should help you get started as you await your copy of "Purple" (as many of us affectionately refer to DBA-3).

Glad to have you back Stevo (love the name by the way ). Apart from the II/40 Numidians (215 BC -25 AD) mentioned by Paul Hannah above:- 1 x Cv or LH General, 4 x LH, 4 x Ps, 1 x El or Ps, 2 x LH or Ps or Roman 4Bd or trained 4Ax ...you could easily convert this to a II/57 Later Moorish Army (25 AD - 696 AD):- 1 x Cv or LH General, 5 x LH, 6 x 3Ax or Ps (by having three Numidian Javelinmen to a base for the 3Ax) ...then there is the I/7d Early Libyan Army (475 BC - 70 AD):- 1 x LCh or LH General, 1 x LCh or LH, 5 x Sp or 3Ax, 3 x Javelin Ps, 2 x Archer Ps (use slingers for the archers). And just for the record, here is that II/32a Later Carthaginian Army (275 BC - 202 BC) that Tony mentioned:- 1 x Cv General, 1 x Cv or El, 1 x LH or El, 1 x LH, 3 x Sp, 3 x Spanish 4Ax or Gallic 4Ax/4Wb, 1 x Javelin Ps, 1 x Slinger Ps. DBA 3.0 is a big improvement over the old DBA 2.2. Salutations, Stevo !
As noted, the Numidians can morph into I-7 Early Libyans (Viking Forge (and, I think, Donnington) sells horses individually, should you want to scratchbuild a couple of 4-horse Light Chariots)
They can also appear as part of III-33, EMNA&S and III-34a, Andaiusian. Great thing about having these armies, if 'Classical' period for tournament is filled up, you can play in 'Biblical' or 'Dark Ages', not sit out.

I've been scratching around on the back of an old envelope this morning and using that bundle of figures it looks like I could build one each of Early Libyan, Numidian and Later Carthaginian armies with sufficient elements to allow battles between any of the three. Not all variants of each army, but more than enough to get started (and figures left over)!
