Your conclusions on the use of mercenaries and individual noble banners is in line of Debrucks description of the Papal army at Civitate. I might add that local town malitias could also have been dragged along with their own banners too. I hope some of the information is useful. I do not have that volume, but I recall the presence of church leaders, bishops in particular, participating in campaigns along the East Frankish frontier (Sorbs) and in Bohemia. At the Battle of Hastings, Bishop Odo of Bayeux was present as was the papal banner gifted to William as a token of support from Rome. You could also add the feudal levy (7Hd) with the local militia (Sp).

I lifted my paint brushes for the first time this year may it become a more regular occurrence! I did some more work on my Southern Hsuing nu and undercoated some peasant crossbowmen for my Grenadines... it's great to be back. Lol

Just finished some trolls for my HOTT forces. 2 based as a behemoth, with 2 more waiting for a base.
Time to cut some bases...

Today I drove myself into work {Wf(X) is on airport pickup duty this afternoon as her aunt returns from the USA} so I was able to set up in the break area and have my first painting session of the year.
I finished off an element of LH for my Mamluk Egyptian and the foot portion of a 6Cv element for my Later Post Mongol Samurai - both of these are back filling operations as I bring more of my stable of armies op to purple compliance.
I also put the first slaps of paint onto my Beja (II/55c)
Cheers

Nice work.
Must feel good getting all those mounted units done! Thank you, it does. The lances of the cataphracts are so delicate that they bend when breathed on.

Nice looking Parthians, vtsaogames.
Cut a few bases, so the second troll Behemoth element was put together.
Then a OG15 Goth KN general and five elements of KN to bring my Italian Ostrogoths up to a BBDBA army. At some point I'll need to do up another 6 KN and some HD to give it all option capability.
Alternatively they can play for the Early Ostrogoths - just borrow a couple of PS from the Gepids and have a BBDBA army there as well.

I have 24 archers for the Nikephorian Byzantine done, now the spearmen. These will make the 6 x 8Bw for the two commands and complete the first batch.
When done this week, I will start the second batch with the LH and 2 x 6Kn.

Just finished up painting the first of two cav. for my Kushites.
Oh man, after several months of painting armies from the Eastern part of the Assyrian empire, this is so different and no beards!
I don't know if this happens with you, but every once in a while when starting to paint up an army, I can get a good vibe about them which is what I am getting about the Kushites. Had the same feeling when I started up on the late Philistines (29/b), and they turned out great, so hoping for the same this time.
