Today I put the finishing touches on the mounted portion of the 6Cv for the Later Post Mongol Samurai, and also did a quick Wood/Flesh/Metal on the other strips that are underway
I am hoping to finish the Italian Lombards before February and make a dent in the Beja around the same time
Cheers

The history of each legion was available at Livius.org, however the site is under reconstruction. Wiki does have some information so you can start there. Also, Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome (Phil Barker) have illustrations of shield patterns taken from various monuments including Trajan’s Column, however, recent discoveries may have uncovered more depictions on arches or tombstones. In general, shield patterns had two pair of wings and lightning bolts on either side of a central spine. The wings are often painted yellow but brown or white are also possible. The same may be true for bolts painted in white or grey to simulate metal. You can also vary the shade of red, if this is your ground colour choice, to simulate a faded look while serving in Syria. Lastly, the bull was the legion symbol and this could be depicted with the legion name on your commander’s labarum.

The 24 Byzantine spearmen lack only their shield patterns and then they and the 24 archers will be varnished. Between detailing the infantry I painted 8 Varangian mercenaries. These were given a somewhat uniform appearance; similar tunic colour and red shields with a raven symbol.
This weekend I can start on the cavalry.

It was Crafternoon day at my local Geek Bar - "The Copper Dragon" - so I took my paints and figures there and whilst sipping a good Sauv Blanc I finished
1x3Kn for the Italian Lombards; 1x4Bd, 1x3Bw and 1xPs for the Beja; and 2x4Pk for the Feudal French
Cheers

Currently renovating my II/28 Early Armenians (vintage Mikes Models) for Purple compliance, and adding some Eric Donaldson-inspired, "basing heresies", e,g. "5Bd" and "10Pk" elements. Pics when complete.

Welcome to the forum rsdean!
Nice blog!
I love 1/72 scale, and really like the variety of poses you got with those Caesar miniatures.

Just finished the floral patterns for 22 Byzantine cavalry shields. These will produce 2 x generals (Cv), 2 x LH and 2 x 6Kn which I will varnish later this evening. This leaves only the 8 x Cv to complete two Nikephorian Byzantine commands.
When done they will be ready to take on the Ottonians, Lombards, Aglabids, Fatamids, Rus and Bulgars.

Here's an in-progress view of a new Waterway I'm working on for the optional, 30" boards. I had already primed the sheet-styrene, painted the "water", and textured the beach. The lower section has just had the gel applied. (Looks like your mother's cold-cream, right?) Overnight, it will dry clear, leaving a water-like appearance.

The shields are the last step toward completing 27 10th Byzantine cavalry.
These were originally collected to build a Nikephorian Byzantine army, but a recent comment by MacBeth led me to review the Konstantinian army list. Rather than purchasing extra archers and spearmen and base these separately, I decided to rebase two of the 8Bw as Sp and 4Bw. With the exception of the psiloi, all cavalry and infantry carry teardrop shiields.
These will be ready for their debut at our next Wednesday punch-up. The Fatamids are ready.
