Hi. Been trying to get up to speed with dba after many years away from ancients and have some basic questions.
1) is there any impact on the game for all foot to be on 20mm depth bases? I have some roman legionaries which are currently on 15mm but they're a pain on slopes etc.
2) if I have 3 units in a line, and my opponent attacks frontal with three and they all are lined up, if I beat the unit in the middle and it is destroyed, am I able in my turn to move the unit in the middle into the flank of either of the other two units? I do not understand the text of the flank rule at all.
3) are there any impacts with playing with different size terrain, specifically hills except the obvious that they will accommodate more elements and may slow you down for longer. I have GeoHex and nice size hills look better.
4) am I correct that the first move in a bound costs zero pips if on a road only. There is no free move off road?

Hello reddog (and welcome back to the ancients' fold).
1) There are pluses and minuses. Most players in the UK seem to have moved to 20mm bases as standard, although there are still a few die-hards. (I am in the latter group.)
2) Yes.
3) As you say, larger terrain may impose a movement penalty for longer. You may also find that you can't place more pieces because the quarter of the board is already full - although this can also happen with standard size pieces. It may also reduce shooting ability. (More than 1/2 BW of bad going blocks shooting.)
4) First move of an element or group on a road is free provided that it moves either its full distance or into contact with an enemy element. There is no free move off-road.

Hi! Thanks for this clarification! I have played a lot of DBA 2, but just the other day i played my first game of DBA 3. The way we read the rules (and I still think this might be what it says) any first move in any bound that is entirely by road OR moves until it contacts enemy or friends OR moves it full tactical move distance without reversing direction is free. Boy, did this make for a different game! You could do anything! I'm glad DBA is still kind of the same game. I guess the rule should be read entirely by road AND (contacts enemy OR friends OR moves full distance) AND does not reverse direction. We read it as (entirely by road OR contacts enemy OR contacts friends OR moves full distance) AND does not reverse direction.

Go ahead and use the 20mm basing if it is convenient for you. I am still "Old School" as well, but I will admin that some of the newer figs are difficult to fit on smaller bases. You may notice that deeper mounted stands are now allowed for 25mm as well.

I too am old school. I like to have my heavy infantry on shallow bases. Sometimes the exact same figures can be used for different troop types. I have a large collection of King Arthur armies and enemies, many of those troops are Spears or auxilia. I have some 20 mm deep metal bases on to which I will put a shallow spear, with a magnet base, and use it as an Ax.
I have hundreds of elements already on shallow bases, I don't have time to rebase them all. So I will keep new elements that I make up compatible with the old ones. Has anybody done an analysis of how armies make out in a game when one is shallow based heavies and the other is deep based heavies.
"In each bound, the first move of each single element or column uses 0 PIPs if it is entirely by road, moves until it contacts enemy or friends or moves its full tactical move distance, and does not reverse direction."
this sentence is troubling. The subject of the sentence is "move".
This move uses zero pips if it is entirely by Road. And a simple game like DBA, the rule should stop there. Now the weird part: the "move" moves until it contacts enemy, etc.
The subject should've been "single element or colum."
In each bound, as its first move, a single element or column can move entirely by Road for 0 pips but must go its full tactical move distance or until it contacts enemy or friends. The move must be in One Direction.

That would have been a lot clearer, yes!

New questions guys The definition of bows for shooting: 1. Are bow armed LH and or Bow armed Psiloi classed as "bows"? 2. If not then which type of unit is classed as bows.? i.e.All other troop types armed with Bow, LB or CB and or Artillery.
Rough going 1. It appears that Rough going only appears to affect movement and causes no penalty in combat. Is this correct?
Psiloi and overlaps 1. In example below the Psiloi would not give overlap to the blades, is this correct? BD PS BD 2. In this example where BD V BD does the PS stop the enemy BD from overlapping the attacking BD? BD PS. Attacking BD BD. Enemy

1) 'Bows' are bow, longbow, crossbow, as per the definitions near the front of the rules- NOT LH or Ps, regardless of the weapons they are depicted with.
2) the only troops classed as bows for shooting are bows, crossbows and longbows, NOT artillery.
Rough Going Not only affects movement, but also prevents rear or flank support for those elements otherwise able to provide it. It does NOT cause any minus factors, though.
Psiloi and Overlaps. 1) incorrect- the Ps does give overlap to the Bd. 2) yes

New questions guys The definition of bows for shooting: 1. Are bow armed LH and or Bow armed Psiloi classed as "bows"? No - the troops that Shoot are those defined in the list as Bows (Bw, Cb, Lb), War Wagons (WWg) and Artillery (Art)2. If not then which type of unit is classed as bows.? i.e.All other troop types armed with Bow, LB or CB and or Artillery. - See above Rough going 1. It appears that Rough going only appears to affect movement and causes no penalty in combat. Is this correct? - Yes correct, Mounted Troops, Mounted Foot and Solid Foot suffer a movement penalty but all troops fight as normal and can make group moves. Psiloi and overlaps 1. In example below the Psiloi would not give overlap to the blades, is this correct? - no the Ps overlap the Bd. Ps can provide an overlap from the front corner to front corner position but does not receive an overlap from that position.BD PS BD 2. In this example where BD V BD does the PS stop the enemy BD from overlapping the attacking BD? - Yes - the attacking Bd is fighting the Ps and so does not provide an overlap. However if the Bd vs Ps fight is resolved first and the Ps recoils or flees then the Bd will provide an overlap for the Bd vs Bd fight BD PS. Attacking BD BD. Enemy Rgds Spratzman Cheers

See figure 6C for an explanation of this.

Another thing with rough going is that in some cases an element that would be destroyed in good going won't be destroyed when in rough going, eg, Psiloi fighting Knights, Cavalry or Camelry or Light Horse.
