I have 10 x 2.2 armies (all options) I will be upgrading, LAP; Polybian Romans; Campanians; Later Carthaginians; Numidians; Gallic; Ancient Spanish; Skythian; Later Hoplite Greek; Syracusan. My oppo has Alexandrian Macedonian & Imperial; Thracian; Parthian. They are all capable of historical encounters. Which match up do you think would be the closest run thing? Which, if any, would be a bit one-sided?
Last night LAP beat Alexandrian Macedonians quite easily while Polybian Romans snatched defeat from the jaws of victory vs Later Carthaginians (sans El) Likely more to do with the playing styles & temperaments of the players as we only recently returned to DBA after a couple of years away & these were our first 2 games trying to come to grips with 3.0
We are trying to come at the rules as if they were completely new but it's hard to shake off half rememberd stuff from 2.2 & even HotT which we had played for 10 years or more.
Regards,
j

One of the things to get used to with 3 is that blades, while still impressive, are not quite the killing machines they used to be and, relative to that, spears are markedly better. I found that my I taliot and syracusan regularly lost to polybians in 2.2, but are much better in 3.

I really like Alex Mac vs Hoplite in a refight of Chaeronea. The Macedonian need to use the terrain to guard the flanks of their phalanx. Alex charging at the correct time and place can secure the victory.
Carthage vs Roman is also a fun fight though Rome still holds an advantage. It is less so than in DBA 2.2. Be sure and use the Italian Allies as 4Ax for the Romans.
Gauls vs anyone is pretty hit and miss as are all Warband armies. Expect to lose a lot.
Greek Hoplite fights are fun in DBA 3.
I would suggest a Punic War campaign... perhaps a Punic War 1.5... Roman/Carthage/Syracuse/Spanish/Gaul/Greek Hoplite(Saguntum) fight.
