Looking at Figure 19b I can see that Pike A can start its recoil but ends this move early because it cannot pass through or push back friendly Horde H.
Likewise, I understand that Pike B will be destroyed because it is unable to push back Pike C behind it.
But, what if the Horde was a little further back? Would Pike B push back Pike C until Horde H was reached & then stop, without Pike B being destroyed?

Yes. That is correct. It cannot push back or pass through the horde. So, it stops.
