Reverting briefly to the Hamlet without a Prince problem, given the rules on terrain placement, there must be a reasonable chance that the plough and the BUA would end up some distance from each other anyway, even allowing for the fact that the plough has to extend into an adjacent quarter. I agree with Martin. If you want some plough near your hamlet, model it as part of the BUA. (That way it will count as ROUGH GOING no mater what the defender rolls for PIPs.) Why would Plough sometimes be some distance from the BUA? Perhaps the fields nearby are more suitable for grazing goats, sheep, and cattle. Or perhaps the elders decreed long ago that the land nearby is reserved for cemeteries. Or perhaps after hundreds of years the drainage has changed, and the further fields are wetter. Or maybe the fields nearby have been depleted over the centuries, and are no longer fertile... ...this is the time before the concept of crop-rotation remember. Actually, I think 2 and 3 crop rotation systems and letting the fields lie fallow were practised during our period and there is even a reference in the Bible (Leviticus) to observing a Sabbath of the land. Simon Simon

By the same token, how do we know that the hamlet's/BUA's distant plough-land isn't just off the edge of the board? But that is beside the point, Stevie. Joe was arguing that a hamlet should have some cultivated fields nearby. I was simply pointing out that the rules for placing terrain wouldn't necessarily achieve this even if "or" means "and/or".
