For me
Group move across bad going must be in a column except by psiloi
Camels treat bad going as good going but it is still bad going.
Camels can move as a group not entirely sure but would say yes
Psiloi can move as a group ok
Camels and psiloi can't move as a group together as it is still bad going.
Rules genius and Baldie not necessarily linked

The group move is not "entirely by Psiloi", so fails one of the conditions. Would you also allow a group (some Ps in BGo, Some Non-Ps in GGo) to move for a PIP?
Ah yes but the group move for the Camels isn’t across Bad going it is across terrain they consider GG so the only elements of the group that are in BG are Psloi. But then you ask a really good question about a mixed group of Ps. Because “A group move ..... across bad going, must be in or into a column unless entirely by Psiloi” then yes, Psloi in both BG and GG could group move because it is a group move across the BG/GG mix. After all would you insist that the Psloi stop their group move on exiting the BG or if one element of Ps exit the BG before another? This is why the Camel/Psloi mix is a difficult issue. Each independent part can legally group move through the terrain but for different reasons. So is it reasonable that this difference doubles the PIP cost. After all in real world the units wouldn’t say “I’m not co-ordinating my move with those troops who can move over this terrain with the same ease as me BUT I do it because I am Skirmishers and they do it because it is their natural terrain.” As I say the common sense says “Yes” but the Barkerese is open to interpretation.

Good point Arnopov. Yes, Bad Going Movement [8.12] does indeed say:- “A group move across bad going must be in a column, unless entirely by Psiloi.” But what exactly does the word “ unless” apply too? Does it mean that the group must be entirely Psiloi... ...or does it mean those moving across the bad going must be entirely Psiloi? (However, I’m pretty sure that the consensus of the DBA community is that the former applies, so you are correct)Some Helpful Downloads can be found here: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes And here is the latest Jan 2019 FAQ: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ_2019_1st_Quarter
I'll add my ten-penneth...."A group move across bad going must be in column, unless entirely Ps"..the camels do not count Dunes as Bad going so should be exempt from the rule. The group move allows Ps to move across the Bad going in any other formation including column...or are you intetpreting the rule as saying the Ps must move in column if accompanied by Camels through Dunes?I would understand this as rational if the Ps and were both crossing marsh...but should it be the case when a troop type that counts the Bad terrain as Good going?I think the rule that Camels count Dunes and Oasis as Good going is the only example of any troop type counting any Bad or Rough terrain as Good going so why hinder two troop types who can clearly function normally in such terrain? And I’ll also add my ten-penneth Haardrada....which takes it up to 20p. (hey, with a few more comments and it might even reach a full £1 ) The Bad Going Movement rule in the last paragraph on page 12 says:- “A group move by road or across bad (not rough) must be in or into a column unless entirely by Psiloi, ” Everyone assumes that the “unless entirely by Psiloi” applies to the “group move”. But what if “unless entirely by Psiloi” is meant to apply to “in a column”? After all, the “unless” bit immediately follows the word “column”, and not “group move”. On other words, Psiloi are an exception and don’t need to be in a column in bad going to move as a group. Of course, all this is pure rule lawyer knit-picking. It doesn’t matter what the rule says or how we individually interpret it. The consensus of the DBA community is that the entire group must be Psiloi, and that’s what matters. I get the way the consensus is flowing and thats the way majority see it and I am not too disapointed as I am not looking to argue my point. If littigatory speek is invoked then can it be noted that Camels in Bad Going are in fact in Good Going or are they in Good Going that counts as Bad Going?😂

It is a bit strange that Ps and Camelry are neither hindered in combat, movement distance or formation changes in Dunes or Oasis, yet they cannot move together? David - while you are 100% correct and I wish I could have been as articulate as you the truth is I cocked up and misremembered the Army list and didn’t bother to check. Actually I have in the back of my mind that when Poros fought Alexander he was ridding an elephant, the chariots having been sent to the flank to fight a separate battle.
So if correct, Poros should have the option of being HCh (before the battle started), elephant during the battle (but with no chariots?).

So Stevie you seem to have changed your mind. But let’s unpack your thinking. Everything may group move through BG in column with the exception that Ps don’t need to be in column. So it is not the group move that is the problem it is the requirement to be in a column. Camels may group move through the same terrain because it is not BG and so also don’t need to be in column. Hence there is nothing stopping the combined group move of Psloi and Camels across the common terrain of dunes because the group moving through the BG not in column IS entirely Psloi. The camels are not moving through BG and so can also be not in column and the group is therefore OK because it is across the same terrain.
So from your argument the Cam/Ps group move is legal unless you add the additional interpretation that all elements must be in exactly the same terrain for exactly the same considerations as each other. In which case any Psloi will have to stop a group move across BG on exiting the BG unless each element does so at exactly the same time. Indeed a column group moving across BG would have to exit that BG one element at a time. Which I would observe is not the consensus of the DBA community.
So clearly the logical extension of the No interpretation is crazy while the logical interpretation of the Yes interpretation only challenges one possible interpretation on one word and doesn’t lead to any other repercussions. Now you can see why my head hurts. This is not only a case of Barkerese meets real world but Barkerese contradicting Barkerese and I can see both sides of the argument.

David - simple answer is Yes you are right. Longer answer is - read “Ancient Indian Warfare by Sarva Daman Singh” and you’ll realise you are right.

Oh I do feel your anguish Paddy. And what you, I and Haardrada say does indeed make sense. If the Bad Going Movement rule in the last paragraph on page 12 had said:- “A group move, unless entirely by Psiloi, by road or across bad (not rough) must be in or into a column.” ...then there would be no problem. If it were written like this, then it would clearly be indicating that the “unless” applies to the group move. But instead the “unless” immediately follows the word “column”, implying that is where the “unless” applies... ...but the DBA community insists that “unless” be applied to the “group move” at the beginning of the sentence. (and for all I know they may be right) “A group move by road, or across bad (not rough) must be in or into a column.” ↑ ↑ "unless entirely "unless entirely by Psiloi?" by Psiloi?" So we have two choices:- We can simply follow the crowd, Or we can try to persuade the crowed that they are wrong. (and believe me, I have tried many, many times in the past!... ...not on this particular issue, but on several others ) The truth is neither Phil Barker nor the play-testers ever conceived of what would happen when Ps and Cm moved together. Or maybe they did, and they thought that “unless entirely by Psiloi” would cover the situation. Stevie - I would observe that the “crowd” haven’t yet spoken in any coherent way or that there is a consensus for either interpretation yet. There certainly isn’t an acceptance that the logical extension of the No interpretation prevents what those players think is acceptable, namely Psloi moving into or out of BG in a group, from happening.
What does anybody who umpires tournaments think?

I was going to leave this question alone as the opinions were sticking to the rule and the rules formality and if I continued I've seen such things evolve into shouts of Heresy! Therefore, being the Heretic I am, I agree with You and Paddy...maybe it was missed in play testing like other situations that have surfaced...so how are they put right...if at all? Does this question go forward to FAQ as an ammendment or is it put on the pile to possibly surface in an ammendment in a future rule update while meanwhile lingering as a house rule?

.....and correct me if I am wrong but it seems that nobody who helped write the rules, play tested them or may be closer to knowing Phil's mind than me has commented yet.

One strategy I use to decipher Barkerese is to rewrite the sentence leaving in only the parts that are relevant to the current situation. So in this situation I would read the rule as: A group move across Bad Going must be in or into column unless entirely by Psiloi
So I interpret this as the group move between the Psiloi and the Camels is not possible because the Psiloi are in Bad Going and therefore the only way they can move as a group is if the entire group consists of Psiloi. It's one group so if part of it is across Bad Going then the move is "across Bad Going".
Is it realistic? Who knows? Maybe somebody can dig out something from the history books. Even WW1 may give some clues.
Cheers
Jim
