Hey there I used to play Dba years ago (in the beginning ) and quite enjoyed the rules . I have some favorite armies (Hellenistic ) and I used to play open tourney's with something from that era all the Time . Do those type (pike men and elephants ) of armies do well in DBA 3.0 or are they at best say a C - class or second or third tier performer . Let me know what you guys think not looking for killer but I don't want to start with something that is just to frustrating (open tourney) .Thanks

The Welsh open was won last weekend by Kassandros' army (Early Mac. Suc.). Something like 1x3Kn, 1x3Cv, 1xEl, 4x4Pk, 4x3Ax and 1x2Ps. Obviously Diades is very good, but that army is pretty decent too. I have also seen Seleucids and Ptolemaics do well. I reckon it's harder with 6x4Pk though.

The beautiful thing about Hellenistic armies is that with a rather small core army lots of variant armies can be made by only adding 1-2 elements. I think 24 elements can make all the variants for 16 armies or something like that. So they maximise variety at minimum cast and effort. Plus they look good and hold their own! So what’s not to like?

They do ok. Six pike armies are more difficult. Alex himself has issues being stuck with a 4Ax and his own identity as a Kn General... Fighting blade armies is difficult with quick kills on ties. Nothing like have a 1/6 chance of losing the game on a single throw...of course you can always win and run over the opposition!
I have done medium well with Alex since the 3rd edition came out. Not like the old days...
If I were trying to win, I would take one of the later Successors.

I have come unstuck more than once by using Kn Alex verses Indian elephant, yet you could make a case that in fact the companions were better than the pike against elephants.
It will never happen, but me I would like to see an extra type "charging cavalry", give them the same combat factor as knights, but the movement and vulnerability of cavalry, it would be so useful.

So bd get a quick kill 1/6 on a pike in general combat ? So pike fight a cav in contact with only a single ranks counting (4 vs 3 ) so if the cav double the the pike the pike are dead and pike cannot kill the cav by doubling them is that correct ? If both these are true this is probably why along with elephant 2 pip movement KN generals that I never bothered to get back into 3.0 . I understand these are all just individual circumstances . My view point is these armies were already complex to play with so many troop types to coordinate then this list of negatives on top of that makes it unplayable Any system that has a main strength of an army (pikemen) as a weakness yeah this just sounds like Hellenistic Nerf . So I think I will pass . Thanks for the info Looks like a great support sight I used to love playing but I guess its time to move on .

Err. There is no QK on Pike by Blade. The only foot troop type Blade quick kills is Art.
Neither Pike nor Cavalry can kill one another in a straight up fight. Cavalry flees...the best throw Cavalry can generate is 3+6=9. The worst Pike can generate is 4+1=5...a recoil.
Elephants are now +5 vs foot... substantially better than under earlier versions. So much so that worry they are overpowered.
Successor armies win tournaments. Alex himself is formidable...just not as good as before.
Where did you get all this misinformation?

Oh...I see now.
Sorry, I forget sometimes how highly jargonized and "inside baseball" that I can be on these boards.
To be clear...I was referring to knights being QKed by Blade on a tie.
That makes an attack by Alex be a 1/6 crap shoot... slightly less actually.
The Successors are quite strong in tournament play.
Alex less so as 4x4Pk seems optimum. 6 x Pk has frontage issues...though Alexander with a Thessalian Ally... 1x Cv an 2xSp may be a viable option.
Further, Alex Imperial seems quite strong as elephants are much improved.
If you like this period...you will find version 3 a great improvement.

David Constable:
How about Fast Knight for Alex (et al) but with the proviso that Fast Knights are NOT Shocked by EL but instead El get Cry Havoc v. Fast Knights?

What is "Cry Havoc"? I found nothing about this in the DBA rules. Jeff David Constable: How about Fast Knight for Alex (et al) but with the proviso that Fast Knights are NOT Shocked by EL but instead El get Cry Havoc v. Fast Knights? TomT
