I was doing a bit of research before creating some new terrain pieces, and noticed that your 'typical' medieval village would have been on or by a river. Many cities too, are bisected by a river.
I may have missed any references, but I cannot see anything in the rules to specifically deal with rivers cutting through some BUAs, apart from the restriction that all terrain features must be 1BW apart. Roads must contact city gates, but what's your thoughts on rivers doing similar? The river could be crossed easily by a bridge in the centre of the BUA.
Thoughts?

Derek Derek, the rule on terrain features being 1BW apart applies to area features, but not to linear features (rivers, roads, waterway). Don’t have the rules to hand, but I know roads can be placed over area features like woods, marsh etc. Can’t remember the rules re rivers.... don’t think they can go through city/fort, but may be allowed through hamlet/edifice (?) Thanks Martin, that makes sense. It would seem natural to have a river and a road crossing through a city or hamlet.

Ahh...
p6, Linear Terrain Features: "It (a river) can cross any feature except a Hill, Dunes, Oasis or BUA."
Hmm. Would be curious to hear all your thoughts, but (in my largely uninformed opinion) I'd happily allow them through Hamlets and possibly Cities. I can certainly understand them not going through Forts, and even Edifices such as pyramids, etc though.

So I had that (partly) wrong...thanks for looking it up, Derek. There’s also some special rule, possibly hiding on the BUA page, about defenders of a city getting the river defence bonus if attacked across a river which goes round the city.
