so... a player ask me, why Bow units have huge factor 4 against mounted in contact ? so the same as Pikes and Spears and better than Blades! is there a good reason for that? or is it just a matter of balance? seem to me that it could be 3 like Auxilia but... thx, Eric

Hi Eric, welcome to the new player! Hope they're enjoying DBA!
Bear in mind that Bow are swept away by any mounted that beat them in close combat. That is VERY different than say Pikes or Spears, and actually makes Bows brittle against mounted. They wanted to reflect that arrows can do a lot of damage to a mounted formation on the way in, until the bowmen realise the mounted are actually not stopping, and mean to follow through. Then the Bows have no real means of close combat self defence, and they just panic and collapse.
Hope that helps.

yes, true!
but Cv or even Kn have 3 against foot and Bw 4 against mounted so a little avantage for the Bw, i suppose it reflect the number of men in Bw unit / number of mounted in a unit no?
and btw Kn destroy at +1 Pikes, Spears and Blades too (ok in good going terrain only)... (but back supported Pikes have +1 against Kn, it's true)
thanks!

Don't worry about it Play the game and enjoy it. DBA is based on Phil Barker's theory of ancient warfare. We can discuss the meaning of unclear statements, but why bother to argue about explicit specific rules? Many people whom I am happy to have as friends do not believe Phil's theory and do not play DBA. I still like them.

"don't worry and play!" is the good answer!

The +4 factor is to reflect the hot reception mounted must endure to close with Bow. Generally its only useful on the first turn of contact because if the Mounted win they sweep away the Bow.
You should always question DBX mechanics and seek improvement otherwise we will stagnate. This mechanic is a good simulation technique as we don't have "defensive fire" in DBX its blended into the Close Combat outcome.
The Pike interaction with Knights is problematic. This needs work but the Bow works quite well.

I personally think “stagnation” is a good thing with regard to games. Like with chess, I want to learn the rules and play them and not have to keep getting new additions or revisions or errata sheets or FAQs. I find that the fun is learning the tactics and maneuvers that help me win the games, not worrying about why the rules are, just wanting to know what they are. Once everyone agrees on what the rules mean, let’s play the game.

Indeed - once the wrinkles are ironed out, stagnation is a good thing.
