I am sorry if this is a daft question or its been'sanswered elsewhere. When placing aa river the start of a game the rule book says "a river must run from one battlefield edge to a different battlefield edge or a waterway" It doesn't say how this is decided does it? I mean if you roll 1 to 4, that gives you a quarter of the board but with two edges to choose? How is the right edge decided? I have probably missed something really obvious

You just choose whichever edge you want, wyvern.
The other point to bear in mind is that, because a river is a linear feature, it has to extend into a quarter adjacent to the one in which it starts. However, it doesn't have to cross from one edge to the opposite one. For example, it could start from the top edge of the board continue into the lower quadrant and then exit on the nearer side edge.
