Two warband in column Front one is contacted by cavalry on its front edge Rear warband can't support
If rear warband was contacted by something it would turn to face I believe Can rear warband which would not add support to the warband fighting the cavalry back off out of the zoc of the cavalry
Change warband for pike who do get rear support against foot or cav Something hits front one and fights Something hits rear one it stays supporting front pike but is overlapped/flanked/hit in rear etc and that counts as negative to front pike Also presume in scenario above the rear pike can't back off out of the cavalry zoc because it is adding support so counts as in combat.
Alexander invaded Britain the other day and we had a few things happen that we were unsure of

Not a stupid question at all.
If the rear Wb is contacted on its side or rear edge, it turns to face, if not, it can move directly to its rear to exit the Cv's TZ (but only in its bound, obviously, so there would be a round of combat first).
The position where an element providing rear support is contacted on its side or rear edge is as you describe. However, providing rear support doesn't count as being in combat, so the rear Pk could move backwards to leave the TZ of an enemy element in close combat with the front element of Pk if there is nothing else preventing this.

Just agreeing with Menacussecundus. Columns being attacked only on their front:- Yes, the rear element in the column can back out of the Threat Zone, whether it’s giving rear-support or not. (note: rear support is not classed as close combat, as it’s not touching an enemy front-edge. See page 10 paragraph 6, Close Combat)Front rank of a column fighting to it’s front, and the rear rank (only) is attacked in the flank or rear:- If not providing rear-support, the rear rank will turn to face (see figure 20c). If it is providing rear support, the rear rank stays in position (see figure 20a example 2)...can’t back out, as it’s in close combat. Front rank of a column fighting to it’s front, and the front rank (only) is attacked in the flank:- No turning to face, and the rear rank can back out of the Threat Zones (see figure 20a example 1 and figure 20b). (note: as figure 20b says, the ‘contact’ between the flank attackers and the rear rank of the column is only incidental. As the flank attacker’s front-corner does not touch the rear rank’s front-corner, they cannot be in close combat)And as page 8, Tactical Moves, second paragraph, second sentence, says:- “elements in close combat can break-off only by a recoil or flee outcome move.” Forgive me if it all seems a bit complicated... Just remember, if front-corners touch, you can’t break-off or back out. I did not know that Pikes get rear support vs Cavalry?
"Pikes add +3 and Warband +1 when in frontal close combat against enemy foot other than Psiloi. Pikes add +1 when in frontal close combat against Knights, Elephants or Scythed Chariots."
