My Gauls are finding it difficult this last while. My warbands can't seem to stand up to the legionary blades, even with support. My psiloi spend most of their time recoiling or fleeing. Any hints as to how to get the best out of Celts?

I had a few games with stevie a couple of weeks ago, finishing 1-2. What I learned was to play in the zero aggression era so you are likely to defend. Then try and deploy as much Bad Going as you can. Take out you terrain pieces and go through the deployment process a few times to see how things work with your pieces. In Bad Going Wb v Bd is in your favour (3v3 and you have the QK). The triarii are even weaker. If you take the 3Wb option the extra movement may help close the flank of some annoying Ps the Romans can field. If you leave a flank open for your cavalry, try to close quickly before the Spears are redeployed. You may be able to catch and flank the General.
Above all, and this is the most important....roll 6s!!! I rolled three 1s in the first four combats to lost the first battle inside 10 minutes!
Cheers
Jim
PS If this works, it may make future similar match ups with the same opponent over cautious as there is no requirement in DBA to attack under unfavourable circumstances. I'll be interested to see how it works for you.
Cheers
Jim

Any hints as to how to get the best out of Celts? Stick to historical precedent - stop fighting Romans and retrain the warbands in the art of fine wine making. Simon

Terrain and hiding works ok for my Ancient British, the problems start when I come out to fight. I do love em though.

But you have hit on a potential failing of DBA. Without a background strategic situation you can end up in stalemates where neither army wishes to engage. stevie has a quick campaign system to help overcome this situation. Cheers Jim

As for not wishing to engage, that happened to us last weekend, when both armies didn't want to cross the river and give the other side the defending the bank bonus (a 3 was rolled for the first element trying to cross).

I like to take the following mix: 3 x Cv, 8 x 3Wb, & 1 x Ps. I like rapidly closing, attacking one flank with Cv & 3Wb. Use rear support vs blades, & terrain to compensate for the reduced frontage.

Does the recoil on ties for fast Wb cause any problems? I'm assuming using 3Wb is better since they are much faster, even if rough, but 4Wb would ignore that tied problem..?

I would always go for the 3Wb option if I had the choice, especially as this would allow more cavalry without mixing more ancient (LCh and 4Wb) and less ancient (Cv and 3Wb) army compositions. As the purple book says, when more nobles started riding horses, the foot became less solid, so the army is much faster. The key is probably to wait for a good PIP throw and emerge from hiding to gang up on an enemy weak point. Even then, you need a good first combat throw, otherwise all of your work will be wasted! True. But to be fair, there is not other set of wargames rules that solves this problem.
DBA can even be said to be quite good at giving some incentive at least for some kind of attack in most situations.

Sometimes the 3Wb recoiling from 4Bd works to your advantage since the Bd have to pursue, sometimes into trouble. I prefer speed of manoever.
