Is this done as single element moves or is there some language I'm missing in the 3.0 rules about shifting from column back to line - the reverse of building up the column from a line?

Individual element moves. I think the theory is that it is easier for a group to follow a lead element and get into column than to fall out and array in line of battle under individual officers.

Ditto to Jim from me on this.

I noticed in one of Tony's videos on YouTube last night (Scots-Irish vs. Picts) that his opponent had 2 LH in line who group moved, advancing into a column for only 1 PIP. Scratched my head at first, but this answered my question!
