In a recent excellent presentation of a Persian vs Greek game on You Tube, Tony does not want his spears to be three deep because "if you are three deep you will have no recoil and die." This followed a message from a friend asking about what would happen if front of a 3 element column of Pike were to recoil.
Both of these situations stem from a rule new to DBA 3, "Pushed back elements cannot interpenetrate or push back others."
So, I would like to clarify what element is destroyed, if the front element of a 3 plus column is forced to recoil. This assumes no enemy element on the flank.
In earlier versions of the game, if a recoiling element pushed back a friend, and the friend ran into an enemy or friend it could not push back or interpenetrate, the friend was destroyed, and the recoiler continued its move.
The question is, thus,
If a recoiling element tries to push back a friend that has a friend behind it (a 3 element column), is the second rank element is destroyed (per the rule cited above) and the recoiler continues its rearward move.
or
Is the original recoiler destroyed because it "meets . . . friends it cannot pass through or push back, (and is ) already in such contact with any of these cannot recoil and is destroyed instead."
Because the second rank cannot push back a rank behind it, does this mean the recoiler cannot actually push back that second rank, and is destroyed. The second rank is not destroyed.

The original recoiler dies.

The situation described by Bob is fully explained in figure 20f on page 29:- “Blade X would either push back Blade Y as it recoils, or it would interpenetrate Blade Y. However, Blade Z (behind Blade Y) prevents this from happening. (So) Blade X is unable to recoil and is therefore destroyed instead.” Some potentially useful player aids can be found here, such as the “Quick Reference Sheets” from the Society of Ancients, and the new “Army List Corrections” file: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes And this is the latest January 2018 FAQ: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ_2018

Another consideration is the positioning of skirmishers. Be careful about putting skirmishing Ps in front of Pk or Wb columns.Page 9 paragraph 6 “Interpenetrating Troops” says:- “Recoilers can pass through friends facing in exactly the same direction to a clear space immediately behind the first element met…” As shown in figure 20f on page 29, even Ps cannot recoil through a column. Although, strangely enough, Ps can pass through a column when spending PIPs to make a voluntary tactical move or when fleeing (see page 9 paragraph 5).
