Just started reading the updated version of In search of the Dark Ages by Michael Wood - like his easy reading style. I didn't realize it had been updated. I have the original version. I also have the TV programmes on DVD. The opening to the one on Aethelstan was a bit of a culture shock when I watched it again after a gap of about 35 years.

According to my kindle this appears to be a 2022 edition. Certainly includes up to date archaeological information but still heavily reliant upon the early textual information as you might expect from a historian. Still love the one on the Trojan war and Alexander but now I’m intrigued to see that Aethalstan episode. Ebook 99p on Amazon bit of a bargain.

I finished up 'Beware the Dragon' a few weeks ago. A very interesting journey though Chian vs West interactions. However Durshmied does insist on polarising the confrontations. In almost every narrative one side has to have a monumentally incompetent leader.
I am now reading 'African Dominion' by Michael A. Gomez which is a new history of the Empires of Early and Medieval West Africa. Heavy going but very interesting.
I took a brief break when I was travelling and read 'On This Day in History Sh!t Went Down' - 365 one page essays on interesting happenings across the ages. Written in a very irreverent style that is both funny and informative.
Cheers

Where else would you find a paper on Sumerian and ancient battering rams? Ken

My copy of Charles X’s Wars, from Helion Company, arrived. Volume 1 covers the armies involved in the struggle.
Future two volumes will deal with the war in the east and the Danish War.

After a one month slog I finished "African Dominion" - interesting, informative but hard going.
Next up is Spencer Tucker's "The Great War 1914-1918" part of the Routledge Warfare and History series

I've started reading the first in the Last Templar series by Michael Jecks. It has caught my attention as it covers a number of my reading interests: medieval history in general, the Templars in particular, and who-done-its.
Cheers,
