Hi all,
Just recently became interested in Ancients miniatures wargaming. Have a background playing some miniatures (WH fantasty; 40K etc) and board wargames and a strong interest in history. Visited a local club here on the weekend (Brisbane, Australia) and was introduced by playing a few games of DBA 3.0, seems a very approachable way of entering this hobby without a massive expense. Decided to put together likely two armies (so have them to play against each other), a play mat and required terrain etc. But then discovered after research online seems the 3.0 rule book is unavailable and out of print. Does anyone know if another print run and therefore restock for stores is likely in the near future?
I will get hold of Sue Laflin-Barker's Start Ancient Wargaming Using Dba 3.0 book in the meantime, but would be great to get my hands on the purple book with all army lists etc.
Next to finalise decision on two armies (Greek hoplites versus Persians or Romans versus Germans or Carthaginian. Decisions, decisons. Likely to just go for Essex army packs (seems a good place to start for my first 15mm lead miniatures).
Cheers,

Welcome rhizy. I’m afraid I can’t help you in getting a copy of the rules…we will just have to wait until more are printed. But I can suggest a couple of starting armies for you. (I know that without the army lists to look at it’s difficult to decide, so you’ll just have to trust me on this)I suggest Polybian Romans and any Macedonian pike army (with elephants!). The Romans have an awful lot of enemies, extending right across the Mediterranean. And the Macedonians can be morphed into a whole host of other Macedonian armies with just a few extra troops. So I do hope you get a copy of the rules soon. In the mean time (and I hope I don't infringe copyright issues), here is a very old version of DBA 3.0 from 6 years ago while it was being developed. It's not the full final version, only a preliminary early draft, and without the army lists, but it may help you get basing and painting your figures until you can buy the full current version:- ---Later Edit: attachment deleted in order to free-up Fanaticus for more photos---Some potentially useful player aids can be found here, including the latest June 2017 FAQ and the Quick Reference Sheets from the Society of Ancients:- fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes

Thank you Stevie. On the suggested armies are you able to please give me the ref numbers from the army lists as may be able to help me track down the sets from Essex or another supplier.

Do yourself a favor and buy some bases and give some armies a try first. I bought some bases for 15mm, 20x40mm and 30x40mm for foot and horse. It has allowed me to play and narrow the armies before I spent hundreds of dollars from Essex lol! Rulers and bases www.litko.net/search.php?search_query=Dba&x=0&y=0Miniatures www.essexminiatures.co.uk - the standard everyone must measure up to www.baueda.com - terrain, game mats (next on my list 2’x2’ mat) and some nice Roman Marian miniatures

Am a little concerned about the painting side of things as my experience there is limited to 28mm GW models. Never painted a 15mm before. One thing I am considering should I just straight up go for a 2x2 mat or get a 3x3 one and then have the extra space available. Guess I could easily use some kind of marker around the boundaries of the 3x3 to indicate the 2x2 area should I just want to play standar 2x2 games. Am considering these mats: www.deepcutstudio.com/product/wargames-terrain-mat-plains/ The smallest is 3x3 but apparently they will customise to a 2x2. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

Rhizy, are you traveling to Canberra for CANCON? If you are there is a 2 day DBA comp running on the Friday (26th) and Saturday (27th).
Cheers,

Essex are usually great, though their horses have rather enormous-looking backsides... Museum Miniatures are great too, and play nicely with everyone. Other great sources are VikingForge (they make a brilliant, cloaked Thracian peltast figure) and Black Hat as well (though they are touch shorter, more like Baueda) and Khurasan Miniatures also.
