I know this army has been done by a number of people, but I never see any good pictures of them. After some preliminary researches I'm still curious about what figures - scale doesn't matter - folks are using for it, and whether this varies by time period or location - Soghd vs. Tarim basin for example. Any help is appreciated!

Ah yes - forgot about those. Though they are Central Asian Turks, I wonder if at least the Tarim states were "Turk-ified" enough for that look to work. I also wonder if the Sogdian were more Persian-influenced.

I used Essex figures and assumed a measure of Chinese influence.
I can't manage a photo, but the figures I used were AKL1 (Khitan Lao) for the General, PCH11 and 10a (Northern & Southern Dynasties Chinese) for the Kn and Cv respectively, AEA6 (Khorosanian Horse Archers) for the LH, AEA 23 ((Daylami) for the Bw and SA7 (Sassanian) for the Hd. I didn't bother with the Ps and haven't gone back since to add it.
No idea how authentic a representation this is, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

There are probably photos of most or all of those individually on the Essex site, so I'll have a look at them, and maybe the Ghaznavid cavalry too. Thanks.

Have a look at the Essex Khazars and Sassanid foot for the foot bowmen.I used the Khazars for my Hsuing nu and Juan-Juan army and considered the Sassanid foot for Sabir archers when I was tempted to do the army...you can use the Parthian/Sassanids for any LH.😊

As to the Outpost Central Asian Turkish figures (which I like) - are they Turkish in appearance or Central Asian?
A lot of gear was captured and copied between groups around the world.

Try the link.... www.outpostwargameservices.co.uk/Left side- click ‘Ranges’, then in the 15mm section there’s Central Asian Turks, about half way down. Click ‘gallery’, and there’s a whole bunch of pics. I used these for my CACS. Liked them a lot. Very little info around about appearance of CACS soldiery, so Central Asian Turkish gave a look which seemed very plausible. How accurate? Who knows? Martin

If it helps google the Sassanian Armies book by D.Nicolle metioned in the reference notes at the start of the army list....there are several images available to illustrate what the soldiers may have looked like.

I'm too web-illiterate to try posting a link, but there's a thread in the Ancients board at The Miniatures Page of fragments of artworks depicting Turkic and local soldiery, mainly I think from Turfan and Karashahr, both in the Tarim basin. Search "Tarim Basin city states," or some such, in that discussion board.
