Matthew Bennett mentioned a book that may prove interesting, “Mercenaries and Conquerors, Norman Warfare in the 11th and 12th century Mediterranean", Paul Brown.
A good presentation and on a side note, the ‘wheelbarrow of war’ is an option for the Komnenan Byzantine under the DBMM army lists.

Unreliable Allies
Looking for ways to improve the Montlhéry scenario, I found an early Slingshot article with Phil’s proposals for unreliable allies. These were found useful and have been added to our ‘double size’ command game. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/06/unreliable-allies.html

I did forget something and am nearly finished with the shield patterns.
Six elements of auxilia palatina are nearly done. Amazing what a few more details and colour can do. Sassanid vs. Eastern Rome with Armenian allies later this week.

Sassanid horde (6 x 7Hd) now form four elements on larger bases (40mm x 40mm). All figures, including the LH, have headgear other than the globe hat – a great improvement. These can also be used as levy troops for the Central Asian States and Turkic armies.
The month of May has been quite productive; the Khanate of Kazan (2 commands), Feudal Spanish finished, LIR legionnaires, Armenian collection redone and finally, the Sassanid horde which nearly finishes the unpainted ancient and medieval armies.
The West Sudanese are all that remain and these will remain untouched until I receive DBMM book III. I expect that list will have more detail that what is offered in the DBA3 book. Until then, there are terrain projects to do.

…and speaking of taking things for granted without actually thinking about them (and risking going off topic…like I always do ), here is something else that isn’t quite right:- Roads. The idea that roads make you move faster is rubbish. In reality they don’t act like travelators that you get in major airports, whisking you along them. No, in the real world roads merely prevent you from being slowed down by hindering terrain. Especially as most ancient and medieval roads were little more than dirt tracks. And the main advantage of the famous Roman roads is they didn’t turn into mud in wet weather. I do wish rule writers (of all periods) would treat roads more realistically. I also share your sentiment concerning roads. The bonus movement has all the hallmark of a Napoleonic game. Further, a road might influence the deployment of troops during an encounter battle, but there were many examples were this was not the case. Watling Street (61 AD) The Roman road was behind the British line. Castillon (1453 AD) The French position was in front of the road to Castillon. Shelon (1471) Muscovy deployed along the road to meet the army of Novgorod. Ravenna (1512 AD) The Spanish deployed in front of the road to meet the French.

One of the much-discussed topics at the SOA forum centred on the representation of cavalry formations in rules sets. Of the many references cited, this one caught my eye: “ Ordnung für grosse Heere und Schlacten” written by Philipp von Seldeneck, published between 1480 and 1493. Of the six chapters, the last two cover cavalry formations and tactics. At the blog is a brief overview and a few changes done to the late medieval collection. dbagora.blogspot.com/2021/05/the-wedge-formation-in-dba3.html

Armenians (‘c’ sub-list) are done. All twelve elements were given a new coat of paint; weapons a standard wood colour, clothing a vibrant shade.
The Sassanid are next; deeper bases for the horde and better headgear for the LH.

Continuing with the mini LIR project, the Armenian will be upgraded to the ‘c’ sub-list.
This will entail some rebasing (4Kn to 3Kn) but nothing major. This should be completed by the end of the new week.

Is the UK not popular or something... what did I miss? I was watching a 4 part series I'd recorded about the zodiac killer and probably one of the few who didn't watch Eurovision(I usually do). Maybe if the UK entered a song about a fish 🐠 maybe we'd get somewhere... maybe even a point...(in our dreams😴). 😂 You were not alone, but then I have no television nor radio – super chilled. However, based on the remarks here, I did catch a six-minute recap on the Internet. I am speechless.
