"The Akbarnama (Book of Akbar) was commissioned by the emperor Akbar as the official chronicle of his reign. It was written by his court historian and biographer Abu'l Fazl between 1590 and 1596 and is thought to have been illustrated between about 1592 and 1594 by at least 49 different artists from Akbar's studio. After Akbar's death in 1605, the manuscript remained in the library of his son, Jahangir (r. 1605-1627) and later Shah Jahan (r.1628-1658). The Victoria and Albert Museum purchased it in 1896 from Mrs Frances Clarke, the widow of Major-General John Clarke, who bought it in India while serving as Commissioner of Oudh between 1858 and 1862." Illustrations of Moghul soldiers in the Akbarnama (painted 1590-95), with some notes of some unusual inclusions: 1535-Flight of Sultan Bahadur During Humayun's Campaign in Gujarat. I had previously found the source document for some of the Persian soldiers that appear in George Gush's Renaissance Warfare. It is Dr. Kaempfer's Album of Persian Costumes and Animals, 1684-5, painted by Jani. The musketeers, Gush figures e & f, are from page 09 a royal bodyguard and a musketeer. Dr. Kaempfer's Album of Persian Costumes The clothes and poses are nearly identical. Gush figure a is from page 016 Cavalryman. Dr. Kaempfer's Album of Persian Costumesand figure c is from page 08 a palace usher. Dr. Kaempfer's Album of Persian CostumesI have recently found the source of George Gush's 3rd Persian musketeer, Emperor Timur’s Ambassador in the Presence of Sultan Bayezid Yıldırım (“the Thunderbolt”), 1599-1600AD, an Ottoman manuscript painting in: British Library. Ms. Or. 5736, folio 172bIt includes three Persians with muskets at bottom right. Byzantine or Byzantine influenced illustrations from the 15th century: The Betrayal, Mural in Agios Georgios, Artos, Crete, c.1401ADEquestrian portrait of Constantine on a gold medal, by Antonio Pisano (Pisanello), Italy, 1402The Robe, Boots and Bow of Byzantine Emperor John VIII Palaeologus, by Antonio Pisanello, Italy, 1438Medal of Byzantine Emperor John VIII Palaeologus, by Antonio Pisanello, Italy, 1438-1442Byzantine Emperor John VIII Palaeologus on the Filarete Door, by Antonio Averuline known as Filarete, St. Peter's Basilica, Rome, Italy, 1445Wallpainting of Manuel Laskaris Chatzikes, c.1445, Pantanassa, Mistras, Laconia, GreeceByzantine Soldiers on a Tomb in Hagia Sophia, Trebizond, 15th centuryFrescoes in the church of Agia Paraskevi, Geroskipou, Cyprus, 15th centuryByzantine Soldier in a Fresco, Church of the Brontochion, Mistra, Greece, after 1449AD (is a better version available?) Frescoes of the 'Legend of the True Cross' by Piero Della Francesca, San Francesco, Arezzo, Italy, 1452-1466ADVenetian, Cretan, Byzantine, Mamluk, Negro & Ottoman Soldiers on 'The Crucifixion', by Andreas Pavias, Crete, second half of the 15th centuryThere is also a Cassone with painted front panel called the 'Conquest of Trebizond', Florence, Italy, c.1461–1465 (attributed to workshop of Apollonio di Giovanni di Tomaso) which is now thought not to depict Byzantines except perhaps for one on the right. Although Crete and Cyprus were no longer part of the Byzantine Empire, their religious art seems to be very Byzantine influenced and portrayes some Byzantine costume. What other 15th century illustrations from Byzantine lands are available? Ian Heath's Trapezuntine Byzantines, 15th century, in Armies of the Middle Ages, Volume 2 fig. 61 is based on the frescoes on a tomb in the church of Hagia Sophia, Trebizond with composite bow added from the so-called 'Conquest of Trebizond' cassone. He retains the straight leg forward riding style from the fresco despite writing in Trapezuntine Byzantine Cavalryman 14th century, in Armies of the Middle Ages, Volume 2 that Clavijo reported the use of Turkish swords, bows and short stirrups - at the beginning of the 15th century. The hat worn by the mounted figures in the frescoes is more like No. 27 in The Crucifixion, by Andreas Pavias and by the figure in blue poined at by the Sultan on the right on the 'Conquest of Trebizond' cassone and by Alexander and some other important people, mostly women in the 14th century Romance of Alexander by Pseudo-Callisthenes, Byzantine Trebizond, Instittuto Ellenico di Venezia codex 5 rather than the hat on Ian Heath's figure 61. Silmilar shield patterns to Fig. 62 are carried by Italians on the 'Battle of Issus' cassone panel, also by Apollonio di Giovanni, Italy, early 15th century, so are not necessarily Byzantine (or Ottoman). mirror site: 15th Century Illustrations of Costume & SoldiersDruzhina Byzantine Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers

Moya Catherine Carey uses a silver-gilt plate (Sasanian period) Iran Bastan Museum 1275, Tehran, for the typical costume on Sasanian royal hunting plates: It has the king sitting backwards on the horse. This is unusual as other Sassanid and post Sassanid plates have figures making Parthian shots mounted normally. For example: Turushev plate, A Sasanian King Hunting Lions, 310-320 CE, Hermitage Museum, St. PetersburgHormizd plate, A Sasanian King Hunting Lions, 5th-6th Century, The Cleveland Museum of Art 1962.150Ufa plate, Sasanian King Hunting Mountain Sheep, 1st half 7th century, Hermitage Museum, St. PetersburgPost Sasanian or Khorosanian Dish with hunting scene, 7th-9th century, Hermitage Museum, St. PetersburgDid they ride facing backwards?
