I have previously written that Ian Heath's idea that the kite-shaped shield was depicted in Europe for the first time in the 'Codex Aureus of Echternach', (The Gospel of Otto III). Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, Germany was based on a dating on the reused ivory cover as c. 983-991AD, but, the manuscript is now dated as 1030-1050AD. The earliest depiction of a Western-European kite shield may be in a Carolingian Bible, Northern France, 976-1000AD. Bibliothèque nationale de France, Latin 46, which was previously dated after 1000. The Kushan Empire was formed by the Yuezhi (their Chinese name), in the Bactrian territories in the early 1st century. It spread to encompass much of Afghanistan, and then the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent at least as far as Saketa and Sarnath near Varanasi (Benares), where inscriptions have been found dating to the era of the Kushan Emperor Kanishka the Great. I find it interesting that multiple examples of an illustration, on perishable material, can survive for over a thousand years. The most I have found is seven examples of horse-archers on silk: Arab, Syrian or Byzantine Horse Archer on a Coptic Textile, 7th century, Dumbarton Oaks Collection, WashingtonEgyptian, Syrian or Arab Horse Archer on an Islamic Textile, Egypt or Syria, 7th-8th century, State Hermitage Museum, St PetersburgEgyptian, Syrian or Arab Horse Archer on an Islamic Textile, Syria, 8th century, Cleveland Museum of ArtEgyptian, Syrian or Arab Horse Archer on an Islamic Textile, Egypt or Syria, 8th century, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New YorkEgyptian or Arab Horse Archer on an Islamic or Byzantine Textile, Egypt or Byzantium, 6th-7th centuries, Victoria and Albert Museum 292-188Egyptian or Arab Horse Archer on an Islamic or Byazantine Textile, Egypt or Syria, 8th century, Victoria and Albert Museum 817-190Egyptian or Arab Horse Archer on an Islamic or Byazantine Textile, Egypt or Syria, 8th century, Victoria and Albert Museum 817-190Comparison of Egyptian or Arab Horse Archers on Islamic or Byzantine TextilesThey were perhaps either mass produced or continued to be produced over a long time period for this many to turn up in western museums, as there are probably other survivers in institutions and private hands. There are also 3 of another, similar, design: Arab, Syrian or Byzantine Horse Archers on Silk, 7th-8th CenturiesMirror Sites Comparison of Egyptian or Arab Horse Archers on Islamic or Byzantine TextilesArab, Syrian or Byzantine Horse Archers on Silk, 7th-8th CenturiesDruzhina Illustrations of Arabian Costume & Soldiers

I have collected most of the illustrations from the 'Great Mongol' (Demotte) Shahnama, Ilkhanid Tabriz, c.1335.This was mutilated by a dealer, Demotte, and is now dispersed in a number of libraries and private collections. Persian Cavalrymen, c.1335 in 'Armies of the Middle Ages, Volume 2' by Ian Heath is based on: 'Ardashir defeats Bahman' in the Great Mongol (Demotte) Shahnama, Tabriz, c.1335. Detroit Institute of Arts, 35.54, Bahram Gur Kills a Dragon, the Great Mongol (Demotte) Shahnama, Tabriz, c.1335. British Museum] and 'Rustam shoots Isfandiyar in the eyes with a double-pointed arrow' in the Great Mongol (Demotte) Shahnama, Tabriz, c.1335. Harvard Art Museums. (Rustam wears a tiger skin.)There a 2 images I still need: 'Rudaba lets down her hair for Zal to climb up' and 'Kay Kavus's champions fight the King of Mazandaran'. The latter was destroyed in 1937, but, there is a photograph. If anyone has access to these (e.g. from the Princeton image collection) I would be grateful for a copy. There are many small drawings in The Book of Kells, Ireland, c.800AD. Some are fanciful creatures. Some are humanoid. Here are those with human heads, arms & legs and no wings: Kells: f1v-2r Columns of figures on the frontis-pieces (includes some beard pulling men) Kells: f4r (upper left) Soldier with spear & buckler in cloak & trewsKells: f4r (upper right) Soldier with spear & buckler in cloak & trewsKells: f8r Man in cloakKells: f44r Decorated initial letterKells: f53v Decorated initial letterKells: f68v Decorated initial letterKells: f86r Decorated initial letterKells: f89r Man in cloak & trews with horseKells: f130r Man in long trewsKells: f200r Soldier with spear & buckler in trewsKells: f201v Seated man in cloak & robeKells: f253v Decorated initial lettersKells: f255v Monk in cloak & trews with horseCheck the full folios to judge how small these figures are. Most of the large figures wear robes, but most of these small figures wear trews - to just below the knee. There is little evidence of ankle length trews. Some of the colouring of those that form initial letters is due to the needs of the letter, such as the blue calf of 68v, so the blue legs of 86r may not be long trews. 130r has the only clear lines under the instep that could be straps attached to long trews, but, some features indicate anatomy instead of edges of clothes, such as lines and circles at ankles and in some the anatomy can be seen under the clothes e.g. 201v. Is there any other evidence of long trews with straps under the foot? Or is it projected back from a 13th century drawing in 'Chapter House Liber A'?
