Figure Scale / Figures at All
Well! This has taken an interesting turn. Most folk seem okay with this as long as the base frontages remain consistent. I would prefer to see figures for visual appeal but this is an Open tournament. Myself I have several 'counter' armies that I downloaded from a paper armies web site and mounted on chunky bases to try out a few different armies. I guess the consensus is aim for standard 15mm bases but we'll try out other options this year and then folk can comment further once we've seen them, in the flesh, (or not), as it were.

I'm hoping to be there this year. I'd quite like to use one of my 6mm armies (based on the 15mm bases). Would this be allowed? Hadn't really thought about this before. No-one has asked! I guess so long as the bases are correct for 15mm it would be okay. Yet another form of openness for the tournament? Does anyone else have a view?

Humble apologies for my tardiness in getting this information into the public forum.
The 2019 DBA3.0 Welsh Open will indeed happen again at the Penarth Wargamers show CRUSADE on Saturday 26th January 2019. Once again the venue is St Cyres school on the edge of Penarth. Doors open at 10:00am with registration until 10:45am. Fee will be your entry to the show plus £1.
The tournament is fully open i.e. bring any legal army, (or even two if you’d like to switch for the plate), and you don’t have to be Welsh. The plan is to continue with the standard format of a ‘world cup’ qualification of three rounds. Four players will qualify for the finals, all of whom will be guaranteed a trophy. Meanwhile the others will be entered into a three round swiss tournament for the plate competition. Half hour rounds with a points system.
While Magister Militum will not be attending the show they have agreed to continue as sponsors of the tournament and I am most grateful for them doing that.
Basically you can just turn up on the day but it would be good if you could indicate your intention to attend.

DBA 3.0 Welsh Open 2018 Once again thank you to everyone who attended and took part. We were a bit down in numbers this year but several folk made the effort to send their apologies for not attending. For those who don’t know we like to use a ‘World Cup’ format. Ideally that is four groups of three or four who play each other within the group. The four group winners progress to the semis, while everyone else plays in the Plate. This year there were three groups so the group winners were joined by the best placed runner-up. (To explain, the draw had been made for ten players when another competitor arrived just before play started. To avoid delay I kept the groups as they were and joined one myself with the stipulation results against me would only count in a tie-break situation. So they weren’t entirely ‘dead rubbers’.) For some reason the first round of qualifying produced a series of one-sided results. But the following rounds were more even affairs. Then the finals, which were all rather lop-sided score-wise but seemed much closer in actual play. Arnaud’s Pachyderms emerged victorious to hearty congratulations to him. Commiserations to Chris whose Romans valiantly tried to fend them off. Well done also to Steve who was the player who almost missed it for coming third. And honourable mention to Andrew who, before this tournament, had played a grand total of three games! Five games in one day and he went home with the fourth place trophy. Richard maintained a 100% record through the plate emerging victorious with Mark and Martin close behind. No tie-breaks were needed to separate these three. Finally a huge thank you to Magister Militum for sponsoring our event and especially to Richard for presenting the trophies and prizes. Full Results:

Thank you to everyone who took part and made it easy to umpire. Once again I learnt things I hadn't noticed but not so many as previous years so the extra practice I get at Tarrington and with the COGs must be paying off. I'll sort out the full results directly.
One trivial note. Someone left behind a small, green, square lunch box, presumably a DBAer. If it's your's let me know and we'll sort something out.

Sadly I am not now able to attend A real shame as I wanted to try out the Polynesian army that I picked up as my prize last year. Such a pity not being able to defend the only international title I ever achieved... Anyone else from Coventry coming?

The dismounting question seems to have been answered by others anyway. I shall send a list of names of those who have indicated they will attend to the show coordinator on Friday and he will do his best to sort you out. That probably ought to be real names rather than Fanaticus avatars!

I hope to be there. I will check the plans of my Coventry chums. does "must retain the same options throughout the tournament" mean that troops cannot dismount? Do you want me to return with the Qaramita? I've allowed dismounting elements in the past although I realise many are uneasy with the concept.

Sorry, my book-mark still had the old Fanaticus but I've had the new one from Martin S. Details at present same as usual.
Doors open at 10am. Registration from 10 - 10:45am. Start play at 11:00am. Three rounds of qualification ideally using world cup format, else Swiss. Lunch Semis and finals for the four qualifiers, three round fast-play Swiss plate for everyone else. I already have the trophies. All four qualifying for the semis will get a trophy, Places 1-3 in the plate as well. Magister Militum are our sponsors again with additional prizes for the Open and Plate winners.
The club have told me if I supply them with a list of expected attendees they will do their best to expedite your entry. So if you know you're coming let me know either on here or via e-mail: aldavion@yahoo.co.uk
Open means open. i.e. you don't need to be Welsh and you may bring any legal army. But it must retain the same options throughout the tournament. Having said that I have allowed folk to use a different army in the plate competition from time to time.
That'll do for now.
