The problem with prize armies is that the winner may already have that army - or you go for something really obscure, which is probably obscure for a good reason. The Baueda Hellenistic Fortified camp (DBA6) is rather nice, quite new (so not many people are likely to have it) and could be used for a variety of armies. Would that be an idea? Yep...camps/terrain can go down well, and are relatively ‘neutral’. I did used to do that for a while but with terrain being so generic would most people appreciate having some more? The novelty wore off after a while so I stopped doing those as prizes. Okay, just looked and MM have a range of terrain pieces specifically for DBA. Looking at the range of prices would people be happy if I spread the joy a bit? I've always liked the idea of each group winner coming away with something... Camps could be good as they're fairly useful for different armies so long as there is nothing too unique about them. Obviously it will be Tuesday before I order now but I would appreciate feedback on terrain / camps as prizes.

Magister Militum will be our sponsors once again this year but they have changed their system. Instead of vouchers they have offered me a prize budget to buy prizes in advance. Their DBA armies selection is pretty good so the base plan is to buy two armies as prizes for the Open and Plate winners. Obviously the plate will be a 'lesser' army. Unless anyone has an alternate suggestion of something suitably generic? I should have added I need to order the prizes by Monday morning at the very latest.

I saw most of you at Tarrington but just to confirm for others that the Welsh Open 2020 will take place at the Penarth Wargamers' CRUSADE show at St. Cyres school in Penarth on Saturday 25th January. Doors open at 10am but the show committee are looking at some means of early entry for DBA participants. There is a planning meeting this week and I will pass on their conclusions as and when I find out myself. The trophies are on order and I suddenly realized we are only three weeks away today! So hope to see you there. Usual blurb applies: The tournament is fully open i.e. bring any legal army, (or even two if you’d like to switch for the plate), and you don’t have to be Welsh. The plan is to continue with the standard format of a ‘world cup’ qualification of three rounds. Four players will qualify for the finals, all of whom will be guaranteed a trophy. Meanwhile the others will be invited to enter into a three round swiss tournament for the plate competition. Half hour rounds with a points system. Any other queries feel free to contact me either on here or at: aldavion@yahoo dot co Hi Alan Thanks for confirming the Welsh Open's on....always a favourite. Can I ask that we make note of amenable Society of Ancients players, and record who fought who, to submit to the Society of Ancients 2020 Championship?? it would be a good start to the Championship year - menacussecundus is one of the drivers of this, but can't attend, so I'm hoping my memory will allow me to re-prompt on the morning of the 25th (!!). Cheers Martin PS....who is SoA among the attending players? Is that what Bill co-ordinates? I usually send the full results to him as part of a national event.

Thanks Martin, as always, for a really good tournament. As others have said, if you want to learn all the rules then play at Tarrington! A real tournament of two halves for me, three wins before lunch and then three losses afterwards. All my games were real blood baths as shown by my novelty position of being the slayer! Where does one view any photos of the event, given the demise of YahooGroups? There are some photos in the DBA (De Bellis Antiquitatis) Facebook group, aldavion, including a rather fetching one of you flanked by colinthehittite and sheffmark. Diolch. Signed up and accessed.

Wheelchairs The problem I have found is that it is not easy to hire a motorized wheelchair for a day, to be at the venue when you arrive, and be collected when you leave. If pushed around I think Scott would have a few words to say about that. It is interesting the lack of wheelchair hire at venues, and most of ours are in the middle of nowhere. I wish Tramadol could deal with the pain as well, Monday going and coming back from Malvern was hell. David Constable Hi David, Sorry you couldn't be with us. As Denis has already said we are now on the ground floor with a view of the entrance. The toilets are in-between the entrance and us. If we were on the first floor there is a lift but I think all of the show is now on the ground floor. I have been asked to give a brief report to the organising committee of my experience taking part and to include any comments from the participants. So I will ask about the possibility of wheelchair availability. It is a modern school building, (3-4 years old), so they may even have some wheelchairs of their own that we could access as part of the hire. If you don't ask...

DBA WELSH OPEN 2019 – FULL RESULTS YEAR OF THE TWO MARTINS Champion: Martin Myers II18c Macedonian – Kassandros Runner-Up: Arnaud Marmier I4b Zagros – Guti “Great Revolt” Third: Colin O’Shea II22c Hatra + II37 Parthian Ally Fourth: Mark Skelton IV59a Samurai 5th: Patrick Myers II37 Parthian 6th: Ollie Currant IV63b Rebel Army of Henry Tudor 7th: Richard Pulley III72 Anglo-Danish 8th: Denis Grey III8 Central Asian City States 9th: Matthew Davison II56 Early Imperial Roman 10th: Keith McGlyn III10c Hindu Indian 11th: Bill MacGillvray II23 Pre-Islamic Arab 12th: John Saunders III4a Early Byzantine 13th: Martin Smith III19c North Welsh + IV64b Medieval French Ally
PLATE RESULTS Winner: Martin Smith 2nd: Richard Pulley 3rd: Ollie Currant 4th: Bill MacGillvray 5th: Matthew Davison 6th: John Saunders 7th: Patrick Myers 8th: Denis Grey 9th: Keith McGlyn
Not quite sure why but I seemed to be rather busy this year. Anyway, the tournament was a pleasure to umpire and my thanks go to everyone for making this a pleasant atmosphere to compete in.
I don't think anyone has ever managed to retain their title but this year Arnaud came as close as anyone by being Runner-up.
Turnaround of the day belongs to Martin Smith who came bottom of the Open qualifying but rallied to win the plate. He did change armies for that, (it was allowed!). I can't remember what he went with but I think it had viking allies.
One oddity of the plate was that after two rounds we had played 8 matches and 6 of them were draws! Same playing restraints as last year, (half-hour games). Then in the final round all four games reached a conclusion. That round had 33 minutes. Surely that can't have made a difference!
Already looking forward to next year.

Last minute queries seem to have been answered. Car parking has not really been an issue in this new venue. I'll be departing shortly, (5:00am), to help with set-up. See you all there!

My personal preference would be to play the rules as written so thank you for that. Puts more importance on reading the rules thoroughly before the tournament.
I didn't want to be sticky about mixing scales so thank you for that as well. And since this is a figure game rule set I think we really have to say the 'counters' we use ought to have figures on them.
Penarth Wargamers are having a search through the club's storage area to find the boards. I'll keep you posted.
The trophies have safely arrived so some good news at least!

An issue may have arisen. For reasons that I won't go into, (local politics is involved) Penarth Wargamers have recently lost access to one of their main halls. The boards we normally use were there and are at present AWOL. We are looking at other options. But if it came to it would it be a problem for folk to bring their own boards? Of course, technically, only half of you would need to do so for the tournament to be feasible. Thoughts?

Dismounting Knights
In the past I have simply allowed this as part of the rules as written. But I have noticed that other tournaments require the player to state at the start of the tournament which option they will use for the duration. What are the thoughts of the rest of the community.
While I think about it I have never required players to submit their army list as they enter the tournament. Is this a standard practice elsewhere?
