Macbeth has just mentioned this in replying to a post in the DBA Facebook group. "The other twist I use is to call a dribble stop. When time is up I call 'cease all moves now, adjudicate any shooting and combats. I find it preferable to 'Do not start another bound, which prevents suicidal charges by the bounding player because they know there will be no comeback in the next bound." I wondered whether it might be worth trying in competitions here in the UK. (Of course, suicidal charges can be exactly that if one's Kn(G) then ties in close combat with an element of Blades.) I like the idea a lot.

Results . 1 . Colin O’Shea. 31 pts 2 . Steve Finn. 27pts 3. Paddy Myers. 24pts 4. Martin Myers. 24pts 5. Russel King. 23pts 6. Jimmy Walton 17 pts 7. Keith Mcglynn. 15pts 8. Steve Etheridbe. 10 pts . Only Keith McGlynn used a non- Middle /late/ Patrician Roman . …not entirely true…I used Polybian Roman with allies and Colin used Marian Roman with allies and Stephen Finn used Early Imperial… All the same, thanks Keith for a very entertaining day; an excellent effort to run two competitions and play in (at least?) one; well done, sir!

Started reading the newly released paperback ‘Persians: The Age of the Great Kings’ by Lloyd Llewellyn Jones. P I enjoyed it. I followed it up with Sattin’s “Nomads”.

Hi diades, this is my humble effort to create some kind of fog of war... Have fun! But maybe you refer to the deployment variant Collision Course. And look out for Jim1973's Time and Weather Rules. Many thanks

I recall an article where there was reference to all elements starting behind the baseline and gradually appearing and moving to deploy. Can anyone point me to it?
Planning to use a similar approach for big battle historic simulation…
Thank you.

I took spear-laden Phoenicians. Having rarely placed terrain for a few tournaments, I reckoned on defending quite a bit and so it was!
First Colin’s Phillistines…with littoral Phoenician allies. Plenty of terrain next to the waterway and a tiny marsh ahead of my left flank. Colin’s two heavy chariots and a spear landing party frightened my landing away… My spears trudged forward, but had to wheel right to prevent their right from being outflanked in a light troop face off in a large marsh. This forced half of my spears and the mounted to find a way around the left of the tiny marsh. Colin had far fewer PIPs than I, but made them count. With the timer looming I charged my left flank in, not being overly happy with the situation, but my luck was in and I came out the better of combat, particularly surviving a hard flank from sallying camp followers…
Next John’s Assyrians. A psiloi skirmish in front of a marsh on my front left flank was to and fro until my spears caught up: fleeing enemy psiloi and destroying auxilia. The Assyrian chariots were left with no option, but to charge, but my spear line held up! To say the Assyrians were not lucky in combat would be an under statement.
Third, Connor’s beautiful unadulterated Philistines. Spears faced off in the centre, mounted clashing on the right, with one of my psiloi filling in in a small marsh. I thought the game was going to be lost on the left where two enemy auxilia closed on two of my psiloi in….another marsh! My psiloi despatched both, albeit by one of them effectively throwing themselves under the enemy general’s wheels…Spears clashed for ages in the centre and my heavy chariot recklessly pursued light chariot prey down the right, frequently having to save hard flanking…
Final group game against Phil’s Midianites. His weaker foot lined up to face mine, whilst his camelry massed on his left to stage an outflanking manoeuvre. Cohesion and more PIPs allowed my spear to advance and to their thing, whilst the rest of my army frustrated the camels on my right.
I’ll save more until results are published…

Thank you to Bill and Lindon for hosting once again. A select platoon of 9 on a lovely warm day at the fort... Lindon kindly sat out. 4 group stage games and a round of deciders. I brought Phoenecians and a goodly share of luck. More detail will follow later...
