The BHGS team are now working full steam as we head toward our biggest event of the year Britcon (11-13th August) in it's new home in the middle of the UK's wargaming map, Nottingham Trent's University City Centre Campus. Britcon this year again features a host of one, two and three day events and competitions, including DBA for which there are 1 or 2 day event options available, with the opportunity to play in several different themes over the (long) weekend against DBA luminaries including : Ken Gordon Lee Storey Peter Davis Richard Pulley John Saunders Denis Grey Martin Smith IAN PAIN Tom Whitehead If you've not already signed up and are looking for any excuse to avoid doing DIY and/or gardening over this 4-day Easter weekend, why not book your Britcon ticket right now and start planning your army for the event? The link to sign up is at : www.bhgs.org.uk/britcon---how-to-enter.htmlEvery Britcon entry ticket again includes a £5 trader voucher and also a grab-bag lunch for each weekend day you are playing - saving you somewhere north of £15-25 in on-the-day outlay compared to many other events and venues on the UK wargaming circuit (and also meaning that "queuing for food" isn't going to eat into your gaming, shopping and socialising time at Britcon either!). The BHGS have also secured a complete block of student accommodation in University Halls, 5 minutes walk from the venue (and next to a Weatherspoons with late night opening) which you can book along with your gaming ticket - our allocation of rooms is already 50% sold out, so if you want to take advantage of this offer make sure to book soon before we run out of rooms. Whichever of our events you are planning on attending, we look forward to seeing you across the table later in the year. The BHGS Events Team www.bhgs.org.uk

I'd seen and heard a lot about the new Wiglaf Miniatures range from Dan Mersey, the rules author of several Dark Ages era games. The range is nominally for The Age of Penda, designed for the wars of the seventh century AD Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and their enemies and is sculpted by Mark Copplestone, but with more than enough Viking/Saxon/Norman etc figures in my collection already to field a substantial European civil war, never mind a single army I'd been dithering for a while whether to pick some up mainly for comparison purposes. Then, on Instagram, Dan popped up and said he has some sample bags available, so a quick Paypal transaction later and I soon had a set of 7 of the guys to have a go at painting them up. As you can see they are sharply cast models, nicely animated and with some non-generic poses. The figures with spears have been cast with open hands, which is always good now that so many of us have cottoned onto the idea of using wire spears or plastic broom bristles ! And here they are painted up and based - I did a kind of slap-chop approach on them in the main, with black undercoat and white drybrushing to give highlights to the paint, but with so much chainmail there's still a lot of drybrushed gunmetal on black anyway. To be fair they aren't as well painted as I hoped - there's only so much you can do with Dark Age figures if you aren't Steve Dean (who does the official images for Wiglaf) The big question with any new range of figures like these is "how do they compare to Essex?", so with that in mind here are the Wiglaf guys next to some Essex Feudal East European spearmen. I think this pretty much nails the "are they really the 18mm they are marketed as?" debate with a resounding "yes". There's more of these photos and comparisons on the full article on my Blog at madaxemandotcom.blogspot.com/2023/03/wiglaf-dark-ages-18mm-figures.html

Britcon is now less than 2 weeks away, and with a record-breaking 337 players taking part so far (over 100 of whom are staying with us onsite), and almost 40 traders, demo games and event sponsors at the FREE-to-enter Britcon Trade Show (which also features a Bring & Buy, and a Free Play gaming room) we're looking well set for a cracking debut outing this year in Nottingham, at the Nottingham Trent University Conference Centre in the heart of the Lead Belt. For the DBA event we've currently got the following high quality, stylish and good looking bunch of players signed up, and with more space than we can shake a stick at, any additional players (ideally signing up in the right quantities and bundles to give Simon an even number!) would still be exceedingly welcome: Denis Grey Lee Storey Martin Smith Stephen Finn John Saunders William Whyler Peter Davis Rob Rush Paul Murgatroyd Phil Steele Ken Gordon Colin Alcock Simon Wilson Details are at : www.bhgs.org.uk/britcon---periods-being-played.html

I've just published my 3rd annual update of "Who's Playing What" survey and analysis of attendance at UK Ancients events over the last 12 months. The DBA section (with data kindly provided by Denis Grey) is below, the full report is online at madaxemandotcom.blogspot.co.uk/2018/05/whos-playing-what-2018-update.htmlDBA
Last 12 months: 13 events, 65 Players, 186 entries
DBA has been undergoing something of a renaissance in recent years with a growing competition circuit and more new events taking place as well.
In the last 12 months 65 players have taken part in at least 1 DBA event, making up a total of 188 entries, meaning that DBA currently sneaks in just ahead of MeG to claim the prize of being the 4th biggest UK mass battle ruleset as of today - again off the back of 13 events throughout the year.
25 players on the DBA circuit have only entered one event - that proportion of 38% placing it pretty much in line with other rulesets.
The full-year total for 2017 was 56 different players, so DBA is seeing a very solid increase in popularity as well so far this year.

You know how it goes, you have lots of stuff on the painting table, some of which you might need fairly soon... but that long-neglected project somehow insinuates itself into your mind and forces it's way to the front even thought it's not a priority at all ? Well, in the last week or so, that project for me has been painting a DBA v3 Chimu Imperial Army 1350-1480AD from Lurkio, that I won in a competition more than a year ago. I don't really play DBA all that often, I have no intention of expanding the army to a full larger-scale-rulesystem one, but these guys had been waiting to be painted and, well, one day I just got the bug... See them here
