I've just found out about the death of John Mollo, who will be well known to many gamers as the author of numerous books on military uniforms. According to The Times on 28th Oct, Mr. Mollo died 'from the effects of vascular dementia on October 25th 2017, aged 86.' The details are in the paper's obituary section. I hadn't realised that Mr. Mollo won an Oscar for costume design for the first Star Wars film. His first involvement with films was as an adviser on Tony Richardson's Charge of the Light Brigade - a film I really enjoyed - no wonder the uniforms looked so right.

I've watched Steve Dean's forum for many years and have appreciated his painting. I even managed to pick up a painted LH element for a late medieval army on ebay for an absolute bargain price. I can only assume that someone else bought it first and for some reason decided to sell it on. It has pride of place in my collection. Really great to see top notch painters like Steve and Alex sharing their work with the rest of us. I would never deride or belittle another person's painting - especially as I am no 'great shakes' myself, but the fact is that some people are just in another league when it come to brushwork.

I first came across Alex on this forum. I am in the UK and sent him a large number of Essex 15mm mounted and am delighted with the results. He sent numerous pictures of the figures and kept in regular touch. His prices were very reasonable, especially for that standard of painting. Payment was through PayPal and all went smoothly. Recently, I sent him an even bigger order and am looking forward to seeing the results.

I have enjoyed these videos and, although I've been playing DBA on and off for some years, I have gained new knowledge. For example, I had not realised that Ps don't count as being overlapped unless the overlapping element is forward of the Ps front edge.

Just finished The Flame Bearer, latest volume in The Last Kingdom series by Bernard Cornwell. Wont say much for fear of spoiling it for other readers. Suffice to say that I really like this series and The Flame Bearer did not disappoint.

Confirming that my Parthians are Xyston figures. Painted and based by Phil Hart who ran an excellent painting service but, sadly, died a couple of years ago. If you search on Hart of War painting, you can still see pics of his work including my Parthians.

Thanks to Stevie and Medieval Thomas for responding. It is good to know that I hadn't missed something important in the rules.

A little while ago I came across a claim that if LH draw with 4Kn in close combat then the 4Kn must recoil and, further, that all 'heavy troop types' had to recoil from all 'light troop types' if they drew in close combat. I cannot find this in the rules; have I missed something? As far as I can see, when close combat scores are equal, there is no general rule about heavy v light and 4Kn only recoil from 3Kn and solid foot who are not blades, long bow or cross bow.

Just finished reading Rage of Ares by Christian Cameron. This is the 6th (and probably last) novel in his Long War series and focuses mainly on the battle of Plataea in 479BC. I enjoyed most of it - I skipped over some of the musings on domestic 'trivia'. I've enjoyed the whole series, which covers the life and mixed fortunes of Arimnestos, a citizen of Plataea who starts off as a fairly humble chap and becomes a hoplite, slave, pirate, 'killer of men', navarch of a small fleet and fights at Marathon, Lades, Salamis and Plataea and many smaller actions. I particularly like this series because hoplites are my favourite troop type.

Just the other day I found out that the Society of Ancients has produced a quick reference sheet for DBA3. If you go to their site you can download it free of charge. It is very useful.

What is the format for the Welsh Open next year at Penarth? I last played in this competition many years ago and then it was an open comp i.e. any of the armies in the army list were eligible. I've looked at the Crusade 2017 website but could not find any details there.
