Richard Pulley, winner of the PAWS Summer DBA, has chosen the theme for the third PAWS DBA Event of 2017, which will be held on 30th September.
The Theme is Al Andalus and the Magrib in the 10th Century (Armies & enemies of Islamic Spain and North-West Africa, 901-1000 AD). This is a repeat of 2010’s Autumn DBA theme, but will use the current Version 3 rules and army lists.
The list of armies is as follows:
III/21b Italian Lombard III/29 Thematic Byzantine III/33 Early Muslim North Africa & Sicily III/34b Andalusian III/35a,b Feudal Spanish III/40b Norse Viking III/49 Tulunid or Iqshidid Egyptian III/52 West Frankish (not Norman, so Ag:2 only) III/53 East Frankish III/66 Fatamid Egyptian III/70 Tuareg
Allied contingents will be allowed but can only be chosen from the same army lists as listed above.

Allied contingents will be allowed but can only be chosen from the same army lists as listed above. Quote Bill "Regarding Allies, for this one we will be restricting allied contingents to the same list of allowed armies as the main armies. This is to prevent some of the more unlikely combinations for the theme (not many Pre-Feudal Scots turning up in Andalucía)." That's an eminently sensible solution, Bill. Good plan .....and presumably they need to be listed as appropriate allies in the Purple Book of Wisdom, too.... Martin

Seem to recall that you have an army of purple (or was it blue?) Tuareg so thought that you might like it.

I'm colourblind so goodness knows what Indigo means - but it is what the Tuareg wear and they scythe through the soft oasis dwellers like butter

There are quite a few allies permitted, even with the 'inside the theme list' restriction. Will watch with interest to see which Main+Ally combo Arnopov picks (He does a grand job of analysing the options). Think I've picked my army, and an ally choice too....all I need to do now is get the day off :-) M

Four of us met up for a few Hott and PAWS-Practice games chez Mr Hittite today. The Hott was fun, as always, and the PAWS armies challenging, as ever.
1) My EMNAS invaded Colin's Andalucia. A supremely tight match-up, with the decider a spear on spear melee with doors closed on both main fighting elements. Lost 3-4.
2) my Lombards with EMNAS ally defended on a south Italian shoreline vs Richard's invading Fatimids, who had a Lombard ally (presumably a pretender to the local Lombard ducal throne??). The EMNAS ally did a fine job of landing and wreaking havoc, while Kn on Kn action developed further inland. Luck went to the Lombard defenders, with a good day for the crows- a 7+Hd to 3 victory.
3) I now led a Feudal Spanish invasion of (Mark's) Tuareg territory. Alfonso the Magnificent dismounted for this one (3Kn/4Bd) as camels have a knasty knack of scuppering knightly knobility. Major manoeuvring by the enemy camels saw them emerge from dunes on my left flank. However, it was the Tuareg warbands in the centre who won the day, with a devastating charge that left Alfonso dead in the sand (3g-0 perhaps??)
4) Finally, I led East Franks into a defile in West Frankish territory. On the flanks a long fight over steep, scrubby hills by my foot vs Colin's archers was frustratingly slow and difficult, but in the centre the East Frankish knights had some success, the king destroying an enemy Kn on a dramatic 6-1 roll. He then turned on an adjacent West Frankish Bd, and the combat draw result saw the East Frankish ruler dragged rudely from his horse, to lose the game 4G-3.
A VERY enjoyable day, and still no nearer discovering which from the list is the super-army (....probably because there isn't one :-) )

Thanks Martin for the reports, same issues, as have a preferred army but there is no real superiority over the potential opponents. Down to generalship on the day... and of course the dice...

Hi chaps,
hopefully I should be down for this, just got a couple of questions. Elements are fixed? So the same 12 all day? Also do we need to bring terrain? And also, I am new to DBA and finding it hard to get games so technically haven't played as such, will this matter at all, I understand the rules for the most part, just a couple of little bits that are confusing me through reading them and normally pick things up really quickly once I am playing something.
Finally, what station is closest to the venue? I'll be travelling from Winchester so any help with what station would be appreciated!
Many thanks Oli

Hi Oli,
Nearest station is Fratton and, depending on how fit you are, it's about a 20 minute walk to the Stacey Centre. If you haven't discovered it already, the "walkit" website is quite handy. (https://walkit.com)
Apart from dismounting - which I think is still allowed, although Bill is the final arbiter - same 12 elements all day; so, for example, if you take the Andalusians you can't use the Kn in one game and the 4Cb in the next.
Bringing your own scenery is helpful, but the club has some that can be borrowed or you may be able to borrow from your opponent (or choose an army with high aggression and hope to attack each time).
New players are welcome and clarifying the rules comes as standard.
Sadly it now looks unlikely that I shall be able to attend this one, but good luck.
Denis

What could possibly make you think I am taking Andalusians Cheers Denis, thats good to know about the terrain as if I am honest, I don't think I will have time at the moment to make mine as lectures start next week and it is entirely possible I may have my spearmen and all my cavalry units still to paint... I shall see if my housemate fancies a trip to see her family as she is from Fratton, might make it a bit easier for me as I only really know the city centre and Gunwharf.
