Years ago I was wanting to get this army for DBA 2.2. For 3.0 it lost the elephant, which was a shame, as the Khurasan armoured elephant looks great. A while back, I experimented with Shamanid Goblins (and their Ghaznavid cousins the Ghobnovids): Scroll back through this to see their exploits: hesperiana.wordpress.comWhen I saw how the ghulams of my Syrians looked, I realised I could use them for Samanids; and I'd only need to get a few foot. I now have the foot on the way; the first of them are done, the slingers and Dailami javelinmen. I've also done a Khurasanian LH: More pictures are here: hesperiana.wordpress.com

The guard at the front of the tent looks dangerous. Yes, thank OG15 for her. I got a Southern Italian civilians pack.

Nice work Commiades. Do I recognise an AB miniatures horse in your camp? However, I can't place the deer and bull. Where do they come from? Probably. I got them all from Eureka in Melbourne a few years back.

All the new Mithridatics are done; three more 4Bd and a 3Ax, all Corvus Belli. I also tidied up the SCh; its scythes were too long and ended up getting bent and looking untidy. I might actually use it now, though I suspect it's not that effective. No pictures, as the camera is on holiday. The Samanids are over halfway done (three 4Bw, three Sp, a 4Ax, a LH and a Ps, all Khurasan apart from the LH that is Essex), but I'm spending more time reading than painting lately. I've added a few pictures of the Mithridatics here: fanaticus-thread

I've been updating my Mithridatic army. Firstly, I created a camp for it that had the horse, deer and bull that apparently Mithridates used as guards: More pictures here: /hesperiana.wordpress.com/Then I painted some new figures for the imitation legionaries and javelinmen, using some new Corvus Belli figures: I renovated the scythed chariot and I painted some Armenians for allies. I will start plotting the gathering of equipment to play "Posiedon's Warriors" and ideally will get it underway this year at my club. You will be in the first group to receive a report. From reading it looks good, simple mechanics, subtle differences between ships and fleets, not much record keeping. Clearly not this Poseidon's Warriors: I've got the Lambshead book and would be interested to hear how you get on with using it. I've got the ships (unpainted), and using them is a project I'd like to get to.

I remember seeing this as a small child on Melbourne television - going on holiday to the big city and being able to choose from four channels in colour was a huge treat back in the day.
I found the book way back at a second hand bookfair and was reading it when I travelled to Sweden some time ago. The Swedish wargamers I caught up with told me that they had studied it in school.
Cheers
I'll make a point of looking for the film when I finish the book. I wonder how much of the dialogue would make it into the film; it's pretty amusing.

Mark, Is this the basis for the 60s movie staring Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier? Cheers, I believe so. I've not seen it.

Figures from Khurasan arrived yesterday - Khurasanian foot for Samanids and enough Late Romans for a BBDBA Eastern Roman army. Khurasanians are all prepped and underway.

Reading The Long Ships by Frans Bengtsson. It's a fun read. He has a good sense of humour. It's got me thinking about Early Muslim North Africans again (as opposed to Vikings).

The two spearmen appear to be remarkably calm in the close presence of such an agitated Essex horse. (Grins.) Their heads are cocked to one side - they're trying hard to ignore it.

With the draft animals, there is the sense of forward motion, so we're more limited in the figure-arrangement. I wanted mine looking more immoveable, so side-on. It's not going to budge! I'd not realised the draft animals got in the way so much. I could paint the draft animals and base on a 40 x 40, but it'd only be for display.

I've finished Mithridates' camp. Apparently he used a stag, a bull and a stallion as guards! This camp is the forerunner for some Armenian allies. Along with Armenian allies, I'm also painting some of the CB Carthaginians I got earlier this year. When not fighting for Carthage, they will be imitation legionaries for Mithridates; here's the first of them: More pictures are here: hesperiana.wordpress.com.
