We played 5 games last week where the theme was that whoever won terrain HAD to place a river. This forced us to use the river rules to become familiar with them and to see what issues we would run into.
As it so happens, in one game I deployed several of my units in my army on a river.
According to the rules, you do not dice to see what type of river you have until you attempt to cross. In which case, we determined that I would not know what the movement restrictions, if any, were until it was my bound to move.
What do you all think about handling the river rules this way?

Tony: We actually covered this in the FAQ... "Q: May I deploy in a river? A: No." Joe Collins

Thanks for that, Joe. I had misplaced mine so I will print out several copies and leave some at our place of battle.
