Powerful but unreliable, war elephants had an unfortunate tendency to be driven mad by their wounds and stampeding in every direction as a result of their panic.
So instead of fleeing or recoiling, elephants should stampede.
First determined the stampede direction with a die roll. 1 = turn 90 deg right and charge, 2 = turn 135 deg right and charge, 3 = reverse and charge, 4 = turn left 135 deg and charge, 5 = turn 90 deg left and charge, 6 = re-roll.
The elephant unit continues in the charge direction attacking anyone, friend or foe, eliminating itself after inflicting any battle losses on the unit it attacks.
Elephants that do not contact another unit continue to move until they leave the battle area.

I think the existing rules where elephants destroy any unit they recoil or flee into captures the feeling of a panicked stampede without adding unnecessary complication.

I think your stampeding elephants are quite the thing for the Battle of Zama, especially encounters with roman velites (surely with a reroll of sixes ).

Yes, general rule change is not necessary. But I think Elephants should be much more dangerous than they are. I never loved and never will agree to DBA's right angled line up and straight movements forward and backward. And the conforming rules. It just doesn’t feel right. So, hey, I'd even use this 'angled recoil rule' for any impetous mounted troops...
