So I have loads of DBA armies in 15mm ….BUT…. I can’t help thinking I’ve got it all wrong! Let me explain……
I started playing DBA in 6mm when a friend made all the 2nd Punic War armies. The whole set plus terrain fitted in a toolbox and that’s all we needed. We could play in the club or in the pub… it didn’t matter. Plus the armies looked like armies. Pike blocks were blocks, cavalry swarmed and elephants came in herds.
Then after 7th edn WRG I collected a few 15mm DBA armies….sure the individual figures look better BUT too few. 2 figures don’t look like a cloud of Psloi, 8 figures doesn’t look like a pike block and 3 mounted troops doesn’t look like a charge.
I’ve seen 25mm - 28mm but get agoraphobia at that scale - but I do like the 60mm bases as they are chunky and meaningful.
So now let’s look at 10mm. Big enough so they aren’t armed stubble but small enough to give an impression of mass. On 40mm bases these look good but on 60mm bases even better. Lots of figures and each base representing a mass of troops. Visually stunning but still with the solid DBA rules.
So if I started again I probably go for 10mm be very tempted by 60mm base widths. What does everyone else think?

...well I started with 15mm when DBM & DBA were still fresh. Then DBR appeared; for me the hope of finally conquering Siberia. Unfortunately, PB turned off the lights. But the rules are still being played. Now that I've switched to Triumph I have to hope that the internet never goes on strike because of Meshwesh's army lists...

I would have thought 15mm was the more popular scale, more so than 10mm

I think you've summarised things well. The small scale gives a better visual effect. The bigger scale is more fun to paint. Most importantly, 15mm gives you far more options to play against others and that, I think is the biggest hook. If I started again, knowing that I would be gaming mostly solo, I would go for the smaller scales. But once your 15mm armies snowball, it's hard to change. I haven't given up on the small scales. There are some very cheap, quite generic, laser cut MDF 2mm "figures" for Strength and Honour that could make a pool for dozens of DBA armies. They would take no time to paint and much of your terrain will be usable. National character can be added in command elements, camps, BUA, terrain, etc
Cheers
Jim

I'm still a noob here, and shifting to 15mm was a change for me. I used to play 25mm, and those 15s seemed tiny to me for a while. Now I'm used to it and the 25s seem huge. LOL. I'm sticking with 15s since that's what everyone around me is using and there's tons of options available. It seems 10mm is more limited for sourcing--but I haven't really looked.
I am coming around to doing my buildings in 10mm aside from the camps (see my post earlier today in Who's Painting What).

Well, Paddy…I started 15mm a loooooong time ago, so got very set in my ways, and am hence unlikely to change BUT IF 10mm to the standard of Pendraken had been an option back then, well maybe I would have gone for that instead. Better mass effect, and easy enough to paint, especially to my ‘2ft rule’ standard.

6mm for me. Most of my DBA, ancient types, FOW stuff are 15mm a true and proper scale. I do own a single 10mm force and I still feel dirty for getting them.
28's I have loads for SAGA, WW2, Fantasy etc. I own a pretty decent size 28mm Russian Nap forcd that is way to big for a standard 6x4 but can get broken down to bd used for SP.
Given a reboot in the modern world the much thinner, slightly hairier and possibly wiser me would be told buy a 3D printer and play everything in 6mm.

Les1964 great links. I like the massed close order infantry look / castings. What scale are these? CarlL

The rest of the epic range is 13.5mm , but they fit in well with Peterpig 15mm figures .

Yes have considered it a number or times but expect I would just end up with more boxes of unpainted stuff I would never get round to.

I’ve not joined the 3D printer set because of the space required and smell of the resin compounds. Besides you can get pretty much anything printed by a mate with a 3D printer or on Etsy.
Love those epic Punic wars minis. That is what I meant in my original post. However, although I like the Warlord Epic stuff, especially the Napoleonics, I’m not convinced. 3 reasons: first is that you are totally reliant on the whims of Warlord Games. For example it’s great if you want to do Waterloo but no good if you want to do the more interesting 1813 or Peninsular Campaigns. Also you are dependent on their packaging - how many 95th Rifles do you actually need? Second, is the boutique nature of the offering - will you be able to buy them in 15 years time? Maybe, maybe not! Lastly, it’s the rules. If I wanted to rolls loads of 6s, I’d play Ludo!
