Hi everyone,
I'm considering a unique project with a friend who's a 3D designer. We're thinking about creating historical armies for 3D printing, focusing on the 2nd or 3rd era of DBA, in 15 mm and 28 mm scales, with potential expansion to DBMM, Impetus, and other wargames.
We want to avoid common themes like Rome and its enemies or the Crusaders, and are intrigued by the idea of designing Diadochi armies. However, I'm interested in your opinions before proceeding.
What are your thoughts on exploring less represented historical armies for 3D printing? Any specific eras or factions you'd suggest? This is still just an idea, but your input might inspire us to pursue this project.

I can never find any decent figures that represent Horde and tend to have to mix and match

A purely selfish thought. There appears to be no figures available any more to build the "sacrificing druids and screaming women" horde for II/53. A friend has been lamenting there's very few options for Seas Peoples (I/28).
In general if I were tackling such a project, I might start by looking at what Essex doesn't have in their army pack offerings. Chances are if they don't have it, nobody does.

A purely selfish thought. There appears to be no figures available any more to build the "sacrificing druids and screaming women" horde for II/53. A friend has been lamenting there's very few options for Seas Peoples (I/28). In general if I were tackling such a project, I might start by looking at what Essex doesn't have in their army pack offerings. Chances are if they don't have it, nobody does. Just had a look at Essex Miniatures. Their range isn’t that extensive but I was surprised to see how significantly they cover various Chinese dynasties. On a different note, I'm skipping the topic of Celts and Pax Romana as I wrote earlier). As for Sea Peoples, Red Copper Miniatures has really amazing minis. Sure will be one of my future projects too! |

I feel like Asia and the New World are chronically under-represented (with a few exceptions). I agree that these topics are almost untouched so far. I'm more drawn to the history of Ancient Asia: the Diadochi, Hellenistic states in India, and especially the enigmatic Kushan Empire. And I'd love to hear more opinions! |

They are probably the most popular period - you can certainly nail a niche market only to find there aren’t enough buyers. 3D is fast becoming a popular idea with the amount of detail etc they can surpass anything. War gamers are very erm difficult to shift however for their likes. It’s not my risk to take, but I’d look at what other 3D designers don’t do rather than the market as a whole.

There are lots of cultures that have some miniatures available, but no manufacturer makes a DBA-friendly range. I recently posted a thread about Classical Indians (one of the most popular armies!) and my frustration that most manufacturers don’t produce all their list options. For less popular armies, you don’t have the option of mixing manufacturers, some options just don’t exist. The DBA army lists are boring, but these have great fantasy crossover. The bronze age in the middle east is a favorite for wargamers. Europe gets no such love. Sad, because you have pre-Viking Scandinavians as depicted in the Torslunda plates-with their great Loki helmets and boar helms; there is the Urnfield culture, bronze age Gauls and Italians. Wargames Foundry makes them in 28mm, but none in 15mm. And WF doesn't really have the Torslunda Scandinavians. Urnfield Culture are sort of Sumerians with leather kilts and felt hats. Falcon Figures used to make them in 15mm; but there were only a few figures in the range and Kai Weaver's phone is disconnected, so no way to get the old molds back.....

Sure will be one of my future projects too! I've had a long look through these, and they cover the vast majority of armies though there is lots of re-use of specific models. I know finding that page can be a pain--I stumbled across it by accident and it's hard to find again. But, like the others have said, the under-represented areas is probably the best bet. I've seen some New World stuff, but not a lot and now it's spurred a slight interest just because it's unusual (and hard-to-find). Now that I have a few resin 3D printed figures in hand and painted my interest is raised--the figures look fantastic (3dbreed models). I'm also using my FDM printers (Voron Trident and V0.2) to print up buildings and terrain which are turning out pretty good overall. |
