Sorry, couldn't resist the opportunity. Having just fallen down the DBA rabbit hole I found myself with a couple of armies, rule book, 3d printed rulers...and no terrain. Since I haven't attempted any terrain building in decades (and I wasn't any good back then), I ran off to YouTube University and watched a bunch of good (and not-so-good) how to videos. That gave me a lot of ideas, some technique instruction, and direction on materials. From there I just dove in and have been building pieces for the last couple of weeks. Am I doing this right? Yes! and I like the wood/marsh combination, clever. Good to have both big and small ones. It's necessary to decide whether elements will need bluetack to stay on the side of hills.
Yours,
Paul
PS where are you based? if in the UK, any interest in playing tournaments?

Yours, Paul PS where are you based? if in the UK, any interest in playing tournaments? I actually hadn't intended them as doubling as marshes. I just stole the removable tree stand from one of the many how to videos I watched. I will be building some marshes soon--they will be similar to the bogs, but with differences to look more marshy than boggy (fewer/bigger water bits, cleaner looking water, more grassy flocking with static grass & tufts). Unfortunately I'm a long way from you in Southern California. :/

Very nice! Looking at the quality I suspect this is not your first wargame! If it is then amazing first effort! One of the challenges of DBA terrain is placing the elements across and overlapping the piece and maintaining contact and/or not toppling over. Heavy infantry on 15mm bases is notorious for toppling down hills. I made mine from acrylic caulking on canvas and tried to keep things either near flat (large, flat cork boulders) or removable (buildings, trees, shrubs). Another solution is to go all out on realism and simply have a felt template that you can replace the piece when elements enter it. The best thing about terrain building is that it's never ending!
Cheers
Jim

Cheers Jim No not my first wargame, but those have been boardgames exclusively for a few decades. My miniatures experience was Tac Force micro armor from GDW/GHQ and 3rd edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle. For which I did minimal (and poor) attempts at terrain. I actively avoided 40K--I saw where things were going there flipping through White Dwarf issues at the time. I do have a little concern on hill slippage. If it's too bad, that just gives me an excuse to make a new set. Of course I'm also starting to think I ought to have a little more size variation in the choices too...

Next batch of pieces are done(ish). Scrub. Trying an experiment & 3D printed the base material. It worked to build on, I will see if it is durable enough. Enclosures. Yeah, I realize they are technically not legal (straight edges), but I'll be using these in friendly games not tournaments, we can skip using them, and they're man-made features like the plough & BUA that are legal to have straight edges. The walls have tiny magnets embedded in the bottom of each piece & matching ones in the bases. The wattle fences are too small for the magnets I had available. The walls & fences are 3D printed. Road. The construction method was found on the Black Magic Craft channel here. I adapted for the material I could source and for using 15mm instead of 28mm like he did. It worked amazingly well. Some buildings. 3D printed at 85% of 15mm scale from 28mm scale files. Well, the Greek shrine wasn't really scaled at all; I found a nice scaling file for use to get other files scaled right to get it about where I wanted--it will work nicely as an edifice & fits on a 40x40 base. The others will find themselves on BUA bases. I'm still pondering how I want to tackle a modular BUA base. The Saxon barn in front wasn't quite complete there, the texture medium was still drying; it's now painted & needs a quick drybrush and seal, then it's done. Finding, printing, and finishing buildings is becoming it's own little rabbit hole. Water features--river and waterway--are currently WIP and looking promising. Then I have some marshes and I'm done for the armies my group is using right now.

Got the first use of the pieces and they worked out well overall. Had so much fun playing today I forgot to take pictures throughout. Just took the one setting up a game. (Yes, that's my Britons. Yes, there's no basing yet. Yes, that's blu-tak holding the chariots on. Yes, I was up until 11:30 getting the pain all on and guys epoxied to the bases. Yes, it was worth it.)
