After spending the better part of last year bouncing ideas off you good people (and voicing my frustrations with some aspects of the rules), I've created a unit matrix that summarizes these concepts while providing what I believe to be a consistent description of the game's units in the form of a matrix.
Each unit belongs to one of 7 unit categories per 3.0:
Swift Mounted (smt)
Heavy Mounted (hmt)
Light fast Foot (lff)
Tough Fast Foot (tff)
Solid Medium Foot (smf)
Solid Heavy Foot (shf)
Solid Static Foot (ssf)
However, as a house rule, every one of the main 16 unit types have fast (fst), solid (sol) and double/deep (dbl). In general, fast units move faster but recoil or flee from heavier opponents, solid move slower but hold their ground, double gets a rear support bonus, certain heavy foot get a side support bonus (designated with an "s"), and certain swift mounted and psiloi get to move more than once in good going (designated with a "+").
To complete the matrix, certain unit types have been imported from other rules (DBM and DBA 2.2): fast spear (3sp), doubled auxilia (6ax) and doubled psiloi (4ps). These are shown in blue.
There are also a few units that are newly created: 4cv to distinguish equites primarily armed with javelins from cavalry armed with bow and lance, 3lh to distinguish hobelars armed with javelins and horse archers armed with bow, Indian (ind) and armored (arm) elephants to provide solid and doubled/deep versions of the standard war elephant (now used to designate African elephants, afr), 3ps to provide a solid line of early hand gunners. These are shown in red.
I've treated mounted infantry (mtd) as the fast version of artillery as they are both transported by horses to their shooting positions. Artillery is divided into field (fld) and garrison (gar) types.
Civilians (civ) are lumped in with hordes as both consist of fighters who are typically non combatants.
Baggage (bag) is included with war wagons - as are litters, command wagons and command posts (all lumped together as command units, cmd).
The summary matrix is shown below, with values for unit type (typ), good going movement (gg), bad going movement (bg), attack against foot (aft), attack against mounted (amt) and range in bw (rng) 0 being contact:
I believe the above provides a complete and logically consistent unit matrix and a handy reference.
