DBA with a Morale Clock
Here's my House Rules/ Homebrew that was inspired by Little Wars TV's Age of Hannibal. It is also inspired by the Jenga Tower House Rules I wrote a few years back that are on this forum as well.
What does the Morale Clock represent?
In this Homebrew, a D10 is used as a 'Morale Clock' to represent the morale of your army. Each army starts with a Morale Clock set to “10.”. This number represents the army's will to fight.
Whenever your army suffers a defeat in a combat turn, loses a key unit, or faces other setbacks, you will subtract from your D10. Depending on what occurs a 1-3 points will be subtracted from your army's Morale Clock.
Once your Morale Clock hits zero, it signifies that your army's morale has broken. Your troops, feeling overwhelmed and defeated, will flee the battlefield.
Example
Your army starts with a morale clock of 10, and on one of your turns your General’s element is destroyed, you will subtract 3 Morale Points, and your morale clock should now show 7. When you or your opponent loses their last Morale Point, that army flees.
What do you need to play?
2 DBA armies
1 D10 for each army (Players can use other things like a D20, just use numbers 1-10. Or use 10 little ripped up sheets of paper. Use anything that can be used to countdown from 10.)
Dice, and the normal DBA stuff
Rules
- All DBA rules stand besides losing 4 elements means losing the battle. Battles are fought until a player loses when their morale clock is zero.
- When to subtract from your Morale Clock? Subtraction happens at different times depending on the situation, follow the text below to determine when to subtract for each occasion.
-1 Morale Points - When you have to subtract “1” Morale Point from your Morale Clock.
If more than 1 element recoils in the same close combat, 1 Morale Point will be subtracted. Subtract Morale Point before the next combat, and before any sequences of play.
If an element is in contact on 2 edges by enemy front edges. Subtract Morale Point when the second enemy front comes in contact with an allied edge.
If you roll 1 PiP for tactical moves. Subtract Morale Point after rolling 1 PiP, and before making any tactical moves.
Withdrawing from TZ. Subtract Morale Point once you remove the allied element from the TZ.
Close combat with an enemy element that is uphill or defending a paltry river bank off road. Subtract Morale Point when that element’s base comes into contact with enemy’s base.
-2 Morale Points - When you have to subtract “2” Morale Points from your Morale Clock.
For each element destroyed (unless scythed chariots, hordes, camp followers or denizens, Subtract “1” Morale Point for each of these elements destroyed). Subtract ”2” Morale Points right after the element is destroyed, and before any other close combats or sequences of play.
BUA taken. Subtract ”2” Morale Points once an allied controlled BUA is lost, and before any other close combats or sequences of play.
-3 Morale Points - When you have to subtract “3” Morale Points from your Morale Clock.
Death of a general. Subtract ”3” Morale Points right after the element is destroyed, and before any other close combats or sequences of play.
Camp lost. Subtract ”3” Morale Points right after the camp is lost, and before any other close combats or sequences of play.
I don't have a DBA group right now, so I haven't got to playtest this yet. If anyone here does, feel free to let me know your thoughts, feedback, and ideas.
