Suggestion for a simple and cheap version of DBA utilizing a 6-sided die to represent units utilizing a grid to regulate movement and facing.
Each grid square would be equivalent to 2 bw.
Facing would be towards only one of the four sides of the grid, and a 90 degree facing movement within a grid square would be equal to 2 bw distance.
Stacking limitations per square depend on whether a unit is typically or inherently fast, solid or deep.
Fast - 1 unit
Solid - 2 units
Deep - 4 units
Fast units are more open formation and require more frontage for the same amount of troops.
Solid formation is the standard shoulder to shoulder (or stirrup to stirrup) array in linear formation.
Deep formation is a doubling of the depth of the solid formation.
Each side of the die represents a unit category:
6 - shock foot
5 - melee foot
4 - missile foot
3 - shock mounted
2 - melee mounted
1 - missile mounted
Summary
War wagon would include command units (lit, cp and cwg)
Fields of fire for artillery, war wagon and bow spread out at 45 degrees from its facing direction, with each diagonal distance equal to 1.5 squares or 3 bw.
Number of unit dice for fast. solid and deep infantry represent actual troop numbers.
Number of unit dice for fast, solid and deep mounted represent cost difference for same amount of troops (elephants being more expensive than horse, artillery being more expensive than camel, etc.)
All else stays the same.
The dice can of course be replaced with actual units for more aesthetic appeal.
