For our Tuesday night game I selected a civil war theme set during the Late Roman period, the Gildonic Revolt of 398 AD.
Despite its historical conclusion, which had all the making of a TV drama, I found the location ideal; North Africa, arable terrain and two western Late Roman armies and possible use of allies.
I planned three battles and for games two and three both sides had the option to employ allies, in this case the Later Moors and Franks.
The terrain used for all three games were two plough, two gentle hills and some scrub.
Game one.
Both sides deployed their infantry forward with LH extending the flanks, the remaining cavalry were held in reserve.
The battle turned to a slugging match with Jan earning a 4 -3 victory.
Game two.
Jan made use of the Moorish allies and I kept the original composition feeling Fortuna would look my way this game.
Having lost the first game, I deployed first placing the legions and a few auxilia in centre with the remaining auxilia and LH extending the flanks to reach the furthest limit of the deployment area. Jan kept a similar deployment as in the first game.
True to form my pip scores were low for the first few turns that I could only move the outside wings while my centre crept forward on the following bound.
Jan countered my flanking turns by despatching cavalry from his reserve.
The battle lines clashed with both sides moving to and fro and in subsequent bounds my cavalry reserve and general joined the fight to seal the fate of any recoiling enemy foot giving me a victory of 5 – 1.
Game three.
Jan scrapped the Moors and employed the Franks to strengthen his main battle line which now included cavalry.
To counter his deployment I placed the army in one extended line with the legions in centre flanked by mounted and auxilia supporting them.
Jan moved first and despite the movement restriction of allies had no problem rolling high pip scores.
On my bound the line crept forward while the LH on my right marched well behind his reserve line where they remained for the better part of the game.
The battle lines struck with his troops sending most of mine recoiling and ending the bound even at 1 – 1.
The battle turned when Fortuna graced me with a high pip score bringing those troops into action that had been inert for most of the game.
The LH struck and sealed the fate of a blade element of Jan’s reserve and elsewhere my troops were gaining momentum pushing his troops back.
With a low pip score there was little my opponent could do to change the situation as on my bound the LH attacked the rear of two engaged enemy to bring the game to a close at 4 – 1.
