Given the use of a shield wall structure of the testudo (tortoise) by the Romans should not Roman 4bd units also get the same +1 side support bonus given to all spear units?
If you ask, "Won't that make Roman blade units too powerful?"
I will respond, "Well, those legions were pretty awesome."
P.S. do not give this same bonus to fast 3bd blade units, they already have too many advantages.

In the concept game we have a Testudo Rule: • Testudo – A Stand with the Testudo Ability that has another Stand with the Testudo Ability lined up directly behind it and facing the same direction gets a +1 Rear Support Modifier in Ranged Combat (only) provided it moved only 1BW in its last Movement Phase.
A better method of showing Roman prowess in Close Combat is to give them the Lethal Ability (+1 on a winning score).
Lethal will make it into DBF but probably not Testudo (but look for it in one of the supplements to come).

That sounds very interesting, keep up the good work!
Where can I learn more about the concept game under development?

From my reading, testudo seems to be less value generally, particularly outside assaults on fortifications, than modern people give it credit. It looks great but it must limit movement and close combat by its very nature. Even wikipedia seems to agree, even quoting Cassius Dio on how it was defeated by the Parthians. Not sure DBA needs the complication.

I'd say that the testudo formation gives good and fast shelter against javelins, arrows and stones i.e. Ps, Bw, LH.
But I don't think there is any need to build it into DBA, because it's already there:
Bd are the strongest foot and the slowest, and their little bit lower CF against LH takes into account how fast those Nubians close in for attack, maybe before the Romans completed their formation?
So all in all I certainly would go forward and use the testudo formation on the table, boy, that'll look great! Awesome!

I agree with Martin and Brian. No need for an added complication.

If Romans get 'Lethal', what do Spartans get? 'Stoic'?
Do these elements cost more?
And which particular period Romans and others would qualify?
Do Asian and Far Eastern armies have their own 'Lethal' equivalents?

Testudo was ridiculous in HC V1, not sure if they have changed it in V2. I am sure it was really useful in some situations but not sure the EIR spent most of their days wandering about with their shield brolly up.

+1 vs shooting at best…….but name me one battle where the Roman Testudo tactic was so significant that it can’t be replicated within the normal DBA range of dice results.

It certainly never helped against that small village of indomitable Gauls...

...but Asterix is not DBA and i think the Romans are ok in the rules and also the fast blades. The problem are the gamers that want change the rules, but playing DA22 you have no problems as you can use DBA3_-Lists-too...

And yet DBA 2.2 was followed by three new rule sets, L'Art de la Guerre, DBA 3 and Triumph. So some people thought that it could be improved. Besides, tinkering with rules is one of the fun parts of the hobby. Whilst there are wargames, there will always be house rules, even ones for Asterix! 😉

...OK, ADG is a simple but good strategy game, DBA or Triumph are sparse beginner drugs. Play a game and you'll see...
