Help me hive mind - you are my only hope.
I am wanting to build up two more obscure North African armies that have caught my fancy
1) I/7d Early Libyan I am creating a 'Legacy of Alexander' Campaign set and would like to have Libya and Kyrene keeping Ptolemy honest.
So at this late stage (early 300s BCE) what would the Libyan spearmen look like? I remember the Libyan Spearmen depicted in the original 'Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars' book - tunic, ostrich feather in the headband, spikey round shield and spear. I have some Essex Libyan swordsmen that look like that. Is this what I should be aiming for?
2) II/57 Later Moorish Reading the UNESCO General History of Africa I've become fascinated with the Berber revolt against the Arab Conquest. It has it all - a mystic woman leading the revolt, Arabs in the invading army's Jund that had all been born in Syria or Africa and after they were beaten, the Caliph sends another army from Arabia that diss the Jund.
By this stage would the Berbers still look like Numidians/Moors from classical times or would they have started to dress like their Arab opressors?
Cheers

For I/7d time period I would look at Carthaginian "African" spearmen. Ostrich feather and tunic is more ancient tribal warbands IMHO.
Cheers

Cheers David, I struck a similar wall with Nomad Arabs during the period of early Imperial Rome; loincloth or turban and topcoats. I would think the Later Moorish or Berber tribesmen most likely adopted or pilfered the clothing style of kinsmen living within the empire. A short sleeved knee length tunic was frequently depicted on most of the mosaics and frescos of the period. A mix of figures bare headed or with head cloth would seem appropriate.
