Currently I'm deep in the baltic crusades and the fascinating armies of III/63b Early Polish and IV/30 Teutonic Order. The Teutonic Order has two double elements of Knights as option, which get an extra +1 CF when in good going.
And now I wonder: Why do LH, Pk, Wb etc. give and receive rear support, but Knights (and Ps) don't?

Well, things like Knights dont really benefit from having another unit nearby since they are heavy shock cavalry, they charge in and try to get and opening and fallback if they cannot to try again. Any unit behind doesnt help. A double element of knights is not two units but a large unit that has much stronger impact, hence the added combat factor.
Elements with rear support like Wb, or Sp in DBA2.2 represent more dynamic formations that were sometimes used rathen than individual elements, were sometimes deeper columns were desired and the added mass helps those in front. Ps used to give rear support in DBA2, representing them being in front of the formation harassing then running behind it and keep launching javalins rocks and whatever.

I think the simplest answer is “because it gives the right effects on the wargames table”.
