A campaign of five games of DBA today, with my friend Richard. This was a ‘SKODBAC’ (simple knock out DBA campaign), as suggested by Ian Hayward on his ‘IanH’s Wargame Pages’ blog. Our setting was the British Isles and environs, 11th century AD. The central protagonists were the Anglo-Danes, surrounded by Vikings, Normans, Welsh and Scots. (I think of each battle as the ‘main battle’ in a decade of warfare).
[NB - full report with photo’s is on the ‘15mm War Gaming and Painting’ facebook group, a public group so should be accessible to all].
Battle #1 - Vikings invade England, and in a stiff fight slaughter the Anglo-Danish fyrd and kill the king, to take over the English-speaking territories. (3g + 4 x Hd -0).
Battle #2 - the Normans decide to invade, but via the back door, and land in Wales. After some initial skirmishing the somewhat indecisive Welsh are trampled by a devastating charge by Norman horsemen (4-0 win), the Normans thus taking over Wales.
Battle #3 - The Vikings, now ruling England, march north and invade the Kingdom of Scotland. The Scots are in feisty form, and send the Norse warriors packing. 4-0 Scots win, with the King of the Scots leading his thanes on foot to break the Viking shield wall and rout his enemies.
Battle #4 - The Normans leave their new base in Wales to attack the Viking kingdom of England. A great slaughter ensues, and the Normans claim the victory (5-4), thus becoming overlords of Wales, England and the Viking lands. Only the Kingdom of Scotland remains independent.
Battle #5 - The Duke of Normandy leads his mighty warriors north up the coast road, to bring the defiant Scots to heel. A very hard fought battle follows, which hangs in the balance until the Duke leads his personal retinue far too deep into the enemy spear-blocks and is killed, the Norman army then fleeing south in disarray. Scots win, 3g-3.
So after five battles, the Scots remain independent and an unexpectedly tough nut to crack, but with an aggressive southern neighbour waiting for an opportunity to strike back. The next battle may decide who will write the history books…..
This is a great way to link a series of battles, and provided a good few hours of fun for both of us. Highly recommended.
