I've convinced myself I gotta have what is arguably DBA's crappiest army, I/63 Paionians. (See Stevie's rant about this army here.) I'm not jazzed about my on-hand options to build it. Xyston actually makes " Paionian Cavalry" and the General is a dead ringer for the description in the Purple Commentary. Thus far, I have refused to buy Xyston cuz they're the poster boys of scale creep. My one-man boycott has been less than successful, however. And, they look really gorgeous, so...here goes. All Xyston. (I rarely mix ranges.) The LH (Gen) and second LH are easy: One pack of ANC20079 Paionian Cavalry. For the 4Ax (Gen) and second 4Ax Hypaspist elements, I had been thinking of ANC20074 Macedonian Hypaspists, but I think "Jim1973" has a better suggestion: ANC2007 Agrianian Javelinmen. Add in a pack of ANC20110 Hellenstic Musicians & Standards to spiff up the command elements. For the Fast Auxilia and Psiloi, their Thracian Peltasts and Thracian Archers look about right...unless someone has better suggestions?

If you email Forged in Battle and tell them what figures and quantities you’re after from their ranges, they MAY well do you a deal without having to go with the full army packs 😉 Nice figures and definitely not 18mm Giants…

From my reading, Paionians were more Illyrian than Thracian, so I'll be using the Forged in battle Illyrian foot for the lighter troops.
Cheers

Once you try Xyston you never go back. Now, that's a scary thought, especially for one whose "happy place" is painting more of his cherished Mikes Models. More likely, this (probable) purchase of a Xyston Paionian army will be a one-off thing. I just hope they won't be too out-of-scale. And, as for their being "18mm giants", as paulisper described them, maybe that will actually be a good thing, for this the CRAPPIEST of all DBA armies. Perhaps the sheer size of the Paionian Auxilia and Psiloi will intimidate all the enemy Knights, Blades and Pikes as they face them...on a wide-open and barren plain. Yeah, right.

i always thought the 18mm Xyston go well with celtic nations as they were giants compared to the tiny ancient greeks and romans

I find Xyston varies considerably. Some Greek slingers I bought for my Forged in Battle Illyrians and some female Skythians for a HOTT Amazon army are more traditional size and mix well with my other miniatures. However, a Hellenistic officer was just ridiculously tall! Maybe the new owners will standardise things somewhat.
