Just an interesting observation, with only a minor rules revision proposal.
Form follows function, and the various battlefield functions (skirmishing, shock, melee, etc.) result from the forms taken by the units in question.
These forms are determined by a consistent pattern resulting from a series of 5 binary classifications, creating 32 distinct unit types
1. Foot (inf) v. Mounted (mtd).
Mounted for this purpose would include all units riding horses, other animals (elephants and camels) and horse drawn units (chariots, artillery war wagons)
2. Heavy Weapons (hvy) v. Light Weapons (lgt)
Heavy weapons used for melee and shock, including: sword, battleaxe, spear lance, pike, pila, throwing axe). Light Weapons used for swarming and missile including slings, bows, crossbows, longbows, hand guns, darts, artillery.
3. Close Formation (clo) v. Open Formation (opn)
Open formation being required for melee and missile combat (it takes elbow room to fence, swing an axe, shoot an arrow, hurl a javelin). Troops armed with heavy weapons can fight in open formation when engaging in melee. Troops armed with light weapons can fight in close formation when using irregular tactics.
4. Fast (fst) v. Solid (sol)
Standard DBA definition
5. Standard (std) v. Extreme (ext)
For example, pike would be an extreme weapon compared to a standard spear, and elephants would be extreme shock troops compared to standard knights, etc.
The following tables summarize the above using DBA unit figure designations (ignoring double based units for now) with some minor tweaks:
arc = artillery in city, arf = field artillery
2lhb = light horse primarily armed with bows (horse archers), 2lhj = light horse armed primarily with javelins (hobelars)
3cvb = cavalry primarily armed with bows (cataphracts), 3cvj = cavalry primarily armed with javelins (equites)
8bw units can be created by double basing (spear and bow) instead of treating it at a single unit, as can all other double based units (8sp, 8pk, 6bd, 6wb, 6kn, 6cv).
hch, lch and 2cm are in parenthesis as they are treated as being identical to 3kn, 3cv and 2lh respectively.
Thoughts or comments?
