OK Sumer – “The Great Revolt” – CRWG Campaign for 2022
Sunday February 13th marked the start of our club’s latest DBA Campaign. This year’s setting was the Middle East in 2250BC – the time of the “Great Revolt”.
The starting line-up was
Egypt – Jon Willacy – Brown – I/2a Early Egyptian
Martu – Geoff Lewis – Light Blue – I/6a Early Bedouin
Syria – David Lawrence – Purple – I/9 Early Syrian
Lullubi – Tony Cotton – Dark Green – I/4a Zagros and Anatolian Highlanders
Guti – Gary Moriarty – Yellow – I/4b Guti “Great Revolt”
Sumer – Dave Lonsdale – Red – I/1c Sumerian “Great Revolt”
Agade – Adam Stone – Dark Blue – I/11a Akkadian
2250BC
Spring
Egypt invades Syria – the battle of Byblos starts off well for the Syrians before the Egyptians surge back. Victory goes to the Syrians after a long and bloody fight that leaves both sides with heavy casualties.
The Lullubi attack the land of the Guti, and are assisted by Sumer. The battle of Nuzi is fought amongst the steep hills that dominate the Guti homeland. At first the invaders make headway but are soon bogged down and defeated. The Sumerians arrive too late to influence the battle and their troops would have had a hard time fighting in the hills.
Agade swoops in to take advantage of the weakened Guti. The second battle of Nuzi allows the Guti to demonstrate their superior fighting skills in the inhospitable mountain terrain. The Akkadians are thoroughly beaten.
Summer
Syria descends on the Lullubi and takes Hasanlu by siege.
Autumn
The Martu erupt from the desert and fall upon weakened Agade. The battle of Kish is a decisive victory for the Martu who overwhelm the Akkadians with superior numbers and fighting spirit.
At the end of 2250BC the prestige table stands at
Guti – 7.3
Martu – 6.2
Sumer – 5.0
Syria – 2.0
Egypt – 0.0
Agade – 0.0
Lullubi – 0.0
I will be putting this synopsis along with some maps and pictures up on the Book of Face in a couple of the DBA Groups.
Cheers

Today we ran the fourth session of the DBA Campaign "OK Sumer" with a few players missing but one ring in to be proxy the game ran smoothly giving us the completion of another year. This synopsis is up on the Book of Face with photographs and maps in both the main DBA Groups.
2246BC Spring Syria attacks Egyptian held Byblos and puts it to siege. The city holds Agade swoops down on Kish and attempts to retake it from the Martu. Their attacks are rebuffed. Elam continues its offensive against Gutium driving towards the capital. The battle of Eshnunna begins well for the Guti defenders before the invaders fight back. The battle goes to the wire but ends in a narrow victory for the Guti, with both sides suffering serious losses. Libya moves against the Kushite occupation of its territory and lays siege to Balat. Kush counters with an attack on Siwa. This does not tempt the Libyans to give battle, and the Nubian forces sweep into the town and take it. Summer Egypt marches to the relief of Byblos. The Syrians fall back before the superior enemy force. Agade continues the siege of Kish. With no hope of relief, the citizens surrender. The Guti pursue the fleeing Elamites to Hamazi. The Elamites turn to fight across a tributary of the Tigris and are supported by Sumer. Seeing the defensive position, the Guti choose to make a fighting withdrawl and suffer light losses as they fall back. Libya continues the siege of Balat through the summer but makes no headway. Autumn The Libyans finally breach the defences of Balat and recapture the town. At the end of 2246BC the prestige table stands at Martu – 23.2 Egypt – 23.0 Sumer – 20.8 Lullubi – 17.9 Kush – 15.4 Guti – 14.1 Elam – 9.6 Agade – 3.0 Syria – 2.0 Libya – 0.0

Last Sunday we ran session 5 of the campaign. Half the players were missing but it was a shame to miss an early set up, so we persevered using the programmed leader rules and managed a very bloody year.

Summer Agade makes another attempt on Sippar – the second battle is another bloody affair, but this time the invaders are triumphant. Sippar returns to the Akkadian fold. Libya’s siege of Sawada continued through the summer. A determined defence by the garrison keeps the invaders at bay.
Egypt launches a counteroffensive against the Sumerian invaders. The second battle of Waset is an overwhelming victory to the Egyptians who wipe out more than half the Sumerian army. Sadly, the Egyptian commander fell to enemy blades before he could witness the triumph.
Autumn With Sumer and Agade both weakened the Guti swept down from their mountain fastness and laid siege to Sippar. The newly installed garrison was keen to show their mettle and held back the attacks.
Elam moved against a badly mauled Sumer and struck at Eridu. The remnant Sumerian army helped man the walls and held back the assaults.

We had perhaps our best session ever last Sunday with all 10 players at the table, a new player joining so that we could add the Saba to the map and 5 battles played out.

Egypt drives into Syria and attacks the capital. The battle of Ugarit sees the Syrians cut down nearly half the Egyptian army.
Syria promptly pursues the Egyptians back to Byblos, and stop to besiege the city as the battered Egyptians fall back. The strong walls of Byblos keep the Syrians from making progress.
The newly formed kingdom of Saba sails across the gulf to attack Elam. The battle of Anshan sees the Elamites, aided by Sumer inflict a crushing defeat on the Saba.
Summer The Libyans make a determined assault on Siwa and take the city.
The Syrian siege of Byblos continues but the city resists and holds out.
Autumn Libya continues the war with Kush, laying siege to Abu Seyal while the Kushites try to get closer, losing troops as they cross the Red Sea.

Last month we were unable to get a quorum together for our campaign but this week we managed to get all but two of the prospective generals around the table and managed to play for two seasons with three epic battles.
2243 BC Spring
Kush launches an offensive into Libya, and besieges Siwa. The garrison holds out
Libya marches to the relief of Siwa. The battle of Siwa is hard fought but results in a Libyan victory after the tribesmen use innovative tactics. Both sides suffer losses.
Saba reaches across the rivers and attacks Egypt in solidarity with Libya. The lay siege to Waset.
Sumer launches an assault on the Martu. Al Kowni falls to a lightning attack before the Martu can react.
Summer
Libya initiates its own counter offensive, striking at Kushite Abu Simnel which falls to a brutal assault.
Egypt marches to the relief of Waset, while the Sumerians send a contingent to aid the besiegers. The Battle of Waset is a bloody affair with the outnumbered Egyptians emerging triumphant inflicting losses on both their opponents.
Syria takes advantage of the Egyptian’s southern front and lays siege to Byblos, but are rebuffed by the local defenders.
Elam attacks the Lullubi, with support from Agade. The battle of Subru swings back and forth as the Elamites try and dislodge the Lullubi from their defensive positions. They eventually drive the defenders from the field. Agade’s contingent arrives too late to participate meaningfully in the battle.

On the weekend we put together the 8th session of our DBA Campaign - we had 5 of the 10 players plus one proxy to fill in, but it was a shame to waste an early set up. This also allowed us to finish off the year we left hanging from last month (2243BC) and play through the full year (2242BC).
2243BC Continued Autumn
Libya attacks Kushite territory and lays siege to Buhen. The garrison beats back the Libyan assaults.
Syria continues the siege of Byblos, but fails to make headway. The city holds out.
The Guti launch a counteroffensive against Elam. Anshan is blockaded but refuses to yield.
Saba attacks Sumer, losing two elements crossing the gulf. The battle of Eridu sees the Sabans triumphant, wiping out half the Sumerian force whilst suffering minimal losses. The Sumerians were caught by surprise, finding themselves set upon by former allies.
The Martu sweep down to attack the now weakened Sumer and lay siege to Lagash. A desperate defence by the citizens keeps the city safe.
At the end of 2243BC the prestige table stands at Egypt – 32.8 Sumer – 28.2 Martu – 27.2 Kush – 26.2 Guti – 20.5 Elam – 20.5 Lullubi – 18.9 Agade – 14.3 Syria – 6.3 Libya – 5.7 Saba – 5.0
2242BC Spring
Elam retaliates against the Guti taking Hamazi by a surprise assault. Saba then strikes at Elam, the battle of Anshan is a bloody affair with the Saba suffering serious losses and Elam relatively unscathed. As the Sabans flee in their boats more elements are lost to storms effectively removing Saba as a threat.
Sumer moves to recovery its lost territory now that Saba is too weak to retaliate. However the garrison repulses the Sumerian assaults and the city holds firm.
The Martu see a chance to recovery their own losses with Sumer committed at Eridu. Al Kowani is placed under blockade but resists manfully.
Kush moves against Libya and puts Siwa under siege. The city refuses to surrender.
Egypt marches against Syria. The battle of Jericho sees the small and lightly armed Syrian army put up a valiant resistance against the Egyptians. The battle is close, with both sides suffering serious casualties but the Egyptians triumph.
With Syria now cut off from its territorial gains, the Lullubi erupt from the mountains and lay siege to Hasanlu. The city holds out.
Summer
Agade strikes at the now vulnerable Kushite territory in the lands of the Martu. Bougras is placed under blockade and the Akkadian forces attack the walls, but are forced back by a determined defence.
Elam continues its drive deep into Guti territory, laying siege to Nuzi. The citizens repulse the Elamite attacks.
The Sumerian siege of Eridu continues into the Summer, no further headway is made.
The Martu siege of Al Kowani also continues and the Martu are no more successful than their foes around Eridu.
The Kushite forces breach the defences of Siwa, taking the town.
Hasanlu finally opens its gate to the Lullubi, returning to its original allegiance.
Autumn
Agade’s forces break through the walls of Bougras and take the town in short order.
Elam fails to make headway with the siege of Nuzi
The citizens of Eridu finally surrender to the Sumerian besiegers.
Having secured its rear with the capture of Siwa, the Kushites move to retake Abu Seyal. However they are unable to breach the defences.
Egypt launches an offensive into Libya and takes Balat in a swift assault.
The Syrians take a desperate gamble and sweep down on Jericho. Sympathisers within the city open the gates and the town is recaptured.
At the end of 2242BC the prestige table stands at Egypt – 36.6 Sumer – 29.2 Kush – 28.2 Elam – 27.3 Martu – 27.2 Guti – 23.5 Agade – 19.5 Lullubi – 18.9 Libya – 8.7 Syria – 6.3 Saba – 5.0

On Sunday we played the final session of our DBA Campaign "OK Sumer" with quite a good turnout - we had four missing players that were dealt with as programmed leaders and three very exciting battles plus numerous sieges.
2241BC Spring
The Lullubi attempt to regain control of territory lost to Elam. The battle of Subru sees the Lullubi make gains on their left flank before their command and control broke down and the stronger Elamite centre routed them killing the Lullubi general in the process.
Agade pushes towards the Martu capital. The battle of Karbala sees the two sides hotly contest a hill on the Akkadian right flank. The Akkadian commander with his chariots take the fight to the Martu commander and his bodyguard. The Martu chief is ridded down and with him gone the army surrenders making Martu a vassal of Agade.
Gutium takes the opportunity to attack Agade while they are committed at Karbala. Sippar is quickly taken by surprise.
Elam counterattacks the Guti and strikes at Sippar. The Guti fall back and leave the city to resist as best it can. It holds out.
Saba erupts from its isolated position and strikes at Elam, laying siege to Anshan while the Elamite army is engaged at Sippar. The city resists and beats back the Saban assaults.
Kush moves to retake Abu Seyal from the Libyans. The city refuses to open the gates and a siege ensues.
Summer
Syria attacks the weakened Lullubi. The battle of Hasanlu is a brutal affair which sees the Lullubi lose half their army including their new chief. They manage to inflict some casualties on the invaders but are soundly defeated.
Elam turns its attention to the now reeling Lullubi and attacks the capital Nineveh. What remains of the Lullubi army helps man the walls and throw back the Elamite assaults.
Sumer strikes across the gulf at Saba. The city of Samad is taken by a determined assault.
Saba ignores the issues in their homeland and redouble their efforts at Anshan. The walls are breached and the city taken.
The Kushite siege of Abu Seyal continues through summer with the attackers making no headway.
Egypt strikes at the Libyan capital, launching a brutal assault on the walls of Farafa. The attack is repulsed by the Libyans in a fanatical defence that leaves nearly half the assaulting force wiped out.
Autumn
Elam used its influence and its gold to goad the Martu into rebellion. They rose up and threw out their Akkadian overlords.
With Egypt badly mauled and unable to respond, the Syrians march back to retake Byblos. The city immediately surrenders.
Agade then turns its attention to Syria and moves on Byblos. The Syrians fall back but the citizens refuse to open the gates to the Akkadians and beat back the attacks.
Plague breaks out in the Elamite camp around Nineveh. The besiegers suffer significant losses, and the Lullubi retain their capital.
Sumer pushes on against the Saba attacking them at Anshan. The Sabans remain within the city and beat back the Sumerian besiegers.
Despite the losses suffered, the Egyptians continue the siege of Farafa. The city continues to hold out.
2241BC marks the end of the campaign. The final prestige scores are Sumer – 53.2 Egypt – 51.6 Elam – 44.7 Kush – 43.2 Agade – 38.2 Gutium – 35.5 Martu – 30.2 Syria – 22.7 Lullubi – 21.9 Saba – 14.0 Libya – 13.7
