I see a dark sail on the horizon set under a black cloud that hides the sun. Take the women and children and bed them down. Bless with a hard heart those who surround me. Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Pale of skin with many a red and a blonde of mane and beard clad in mail and wild these foreigners come. Our lord has chosen to hold them between. A large wood on our left and a large hill on our right, a smaller hill behind us and a burning hamlet in the distance.
I stand in the shield wall in one of two units of spearmen between wood and hill. To our left, Berber javelinmen, with more in the wood. On the hill, our slingers hold vigil. In reserve our lord, ghulam cavalry and Christian guard (3(Kn).To our rear left a column of mujahids (LH).
The invaders form a single line with their general and huscarls (4Bd) in the centre with raiders(3Bd) on either flank.
The enemy line advances and our mujahids move left. As the enemy reach the edge of the woods, a unit of raiders holds steady, three units go wide to counter our mujahids and their left flank races ahead towards the hill. Our lord orders us to wheel back, he joins our right and the Christian guard our left.
The enemy assault begins on the hill. Our slingers are outnumbered and outflanked and whilst half of them exploit the hill to push the enemy back, the remainder are slain. We advance and our lord forces raiders off the hill to face him, whilst our berbers race from the woods to flank the right hand end of the enemy centre. Both of our attacks are successful and two units of the enemy are destroyed.
The enemy renew their onslaught on the hill and destroy our remaining slingers, whilst the reserve raiders at the woods edge shore up the enemy’s centre right. Our berbers redress the line at the woods edge to counter and then the enemy centre is upon us, wild savage reeking giants with axe and shield, whilst the raiders on the hill hit our lord’s flank.
Our unit proudly holds firm against the enemy general, but our lord’s cavalry are destroyed, we must make good our retreat in defeat! (3G-2 defeat)
