On page 9 under the Moving Into Contact with Enemy, it says "...other troops can move into contact with enemy elements only if a single element or at least one element of a group ends in both front edge and front corner to corner, or full front edge to rear edge, contact with an enemy element..." Later it says "In all other cases, the moving side conforms."
Ok so the debate today around this, a line of foot (it was their bound) moved straight into a cavalry element (which was supported by another other on its side edge). The line unit was required to CONFORM (the conform distance was in one half a base width). The player of the foot said the rest of the line of foot was permitted to "slide" to maintain contact with the unit that made contact (there was NO other units in front of these foot units so their was no ZOC issue).
I said that ONLY the unit that made contact would CONFORM and the rest of the group of line would just stop (They did NOT get to "slide" to touch their element of foot that made contact and had to conform to my cavalry).
SO, 1) Am I correct that the remainder of the group does NOT get to "slide" to line up with the conforming foot element. The group would just stop with a gap between them and the element that CONFORMED into combat? OR
2) Am I wrong and does the entire group get to "slide" and stay with foot element that conformed to my cavalry?
ALSO how far can an element OR elements in a group "slide" in order to CONFORM? Must the attacking element / group be able to contact at least 1/2th of the base width to get to CONFORM OR a lesser amount 1/3rd, 1/4, 1/10th? IF they can't CONFORM are they then "stuck" in contact BUT not in Combat?
