I'm still thinking about how to make 8Bw and 4Ax a little more resilient in the face of 4Sp side supported and 4Bd, and I struck upon an idea, taken from To The Strongest!, another excellent ancients set.
What if, we do away with the "automatic" combat resolution of elements touching?
When it is your turn, you roll your pips, and select either groups or single elements. Those elements move, but more importantly, they also fight.
Other elements that were already in contact that you did not "activate" do not fight. You'll have to wait until your opponent's turn for that.
I recognize that this is a major change, and will have kinds of implications for things like 4Bd and 4Pk, and Wb that automatically move forward when they win.
BUT, think about what this would mean for weaker armies in the batte line. Now when a line of 4Ax faces a line of 4Sp, the 4Ax will only fight half the time. Granted, on their turn, the 4Sp could still make mincemeat of the 4Ax, but it would give the 4Ax a bit of time to redress the ranks for a turn, giving their Cav around the wings time to move further forward (especially important for EAP).
An activated Group could move and fight with all moving elements, as it usually does. And when you "activate" an element to fight, your opponent still obviously fights too since it's an opposed dice roll.
A possible downside to this could be that the 4Bd lose that extra attack that is helping them right now. Battleline dynamics might be thrown off when elements start to get recoiled/destroyed.
Also, players may now have to keep track of exactly which elements they have "activated" so that they know which elements can fight. So there's a possible confusion there.
Another downside is that 8Bw won't be able to automatically shoot at opponents on the 4Sp's turn, so you'd lose a turn of bow shooting. There are certainly downsides.
What do people think?
