Today I've finished 2 elements of 4Bd. The other 8 figures have been undercoated black and I've drybrushed the white armour. I hope to finish the the last of the 4Bd this week. Cheers, The final two elements of 4x4Bd for my WOTR army were completed yesterday. That means only the figures for Art element need to be cleaned up, undercoated and painted. Once that is done l can flock all 12 elements. Cheers, Today i completed figures for the Art element for my WOTR army, as well as the CF figures. Tomorrow I'll start the basing process using Tony Aguilar's basing method as demonstrated in his YouTube basing tutorial. Cheers,

A couple of days ago I wrapped up another CV element of the Minifig Asiatic Heavy Cavalry for my Khazars (what I originally had thought to be ZC-224s are ZC-221s).
Then two sets of Minifig Norman Command to make KN general elements for the Norman pool along with two elements of the Minifig Italo-Norman (per Heath). Communal Italian or Sicilian?
By the way, that is excellent work paul!

Lovely. The last batch of Norman/West Frankish are done and varnished. Tomorrow will begin the process of basing, adding terrain, flock and tufts. Banners are ready for the two command elements.
Still awaiting the Nikephorian Byzantine, these will complete the armies required for the battles set in Southern Italy. Already done are the East Franks, Lombard Italian, Fatamid (Emir of Sicily), and Norman. Still thinking about the Papal Army.

Two CV elements for the Khazars painted and on bases - Minifig ZC-224 Khazar Heavy Archers.
Need to decide on horses for two of the elements of Essex Khazar Heavy Cavalry - have 3 half armored painted and ready for the first element. Problem with picking up minis second hand off ebay - you get what the seller has decided is appropriate.

Information is scarce to say the least.

This afternoon flocking and tufts were added to the 42 elements of Norman and French. The Nikephorian arrived Saturday and I will begin their cleaning and undercoating later this week.

While painting the Nikephorian army I will do a timeline of events in Southern Italy and Sicily starting from 850 AD, from there I can select the interesting conflicts starting the ducal conflicts, the Byzantine period, the Muslin incursion and end with the Norman conquest.
These will be done in the same manner as the Dark Age Historical series which began in June 2018.

Haardrada,
Thanks for the links. The second link lists some interesting titles in their bibliography. You can add the Catholic Encyclopaedia to that list.
If a Papal army were to be added to the collection, this would represent one of the mid-11th century.
As mercenaries formed most of its ranks there would be a lack of uniformity among the tunics and shields. Church accoutrements, such as banners and gonfalons carried by priests might be found among their ranks.
Nobles from the prominent houses would be recognisable with their own banners and from the second link, The Dictionary of Italian Noble Families might give some insight to early blazons. archive.org/details/dizionariostoric01crol/page/n5

Your conclusions on the use of mercenaries and individual noble banners is in line of Debrucks description of the Papal army at Civitate. I might add that local town malitias could also have been dragged along with their own banners too.
I hope some of the information is useful.
