As noted in the fanaticus.boards.net/thread/1927/army-aggression thread, DBA 3.0 uses
the aggression die roll to determine in who’s territorial region the battle will be fought in.
This works well for most armies, with Alexander and the Mongols being the invaders and their
opponents being the defenders. But it does not work so well for other armies, such as Hannibal
and the 100 Years War English, who although invaders seemed to have chosen the field of battle.
So here is a simple way of correcting this and making certain armies more historical.
Adjust some of the Army List aggression factors.
Reduce the II/32a Carthaginian aggression from 4 to 2 if Hannibal is present.
Reduce the IV/62 100 Year War English aggression from 3 to 2.
Increase the IV/64 Medieval French aggression from 1 to 3.
...now these armies will have greater chance of being the defenders, and choosing the terrain.
If the French are the attacking-invaders, that does not mean they have landed in England.
It just means they are invading English held territories in France...or the English have invaded but
have decided to fight a defensively on the day of battle.
Likewise, when the Romans are the attackers-invaders, they have not necessarily invaded North
Africa, but are advancing into territory that Hannibal has previously taken from Rome.
But this can be enhanced even further.
Using the “Sun Clock” (which can be found here: fanaticus.boards.net/post/20256/ ) to end
battles at night-time, and a new victory condition which states that the defender who still possesses
their Camp will win if both armies are still in the field at nightfall, you can encourage those armies
who in reality made rash attacks to actually advance.
For example:-
If Hannibal is defending, then the Romans must attack to defeat them, or at least destroy their Camp,
or Hannibal will win (simulating their rash attacks at the River Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae).
If the English are defending, then the French must attack to defeat them, or at least sack their Camp,
or the English will win (simulating their rash attacks at Crecy, Poitiers, and Agincourt).
And at Hastings it will be be the attacking-invading Normans who must charge uphill into the defending
Anglo-Danish in order to defeat them before sunset, instead of having all the time in the world to just sit
at the bottom of Senlac Hill shooting the Saxons to death with their archers and crossbowmen.
